Pretty Sure This Is a Good Thing
Sunday, March 1st, 2009…so long as it was there for reading.
In mid-December 2008, I hit the road to visit the San Fernando Valley headquarters of Fox’s thriller “24,” inside a former pencil factory. The occasion was a visit with executive producer Howard Gordon and a long-promised preview of the first two hours of season seven.
After a Mexican-food buffet lunch with Gordon, actor Carlos Bernard (who plays Tony Almeida) and members of the production staff, I settled into a big leather couch in the writers’ room — in case you’re curious, there was a copy of Reason magazine in the bathroom — to watch the first two hours on a big-screen TV.

In my bathroom is where I gain insight! er, excuse me for a moment…
I’m guessing that after Jack Bauer uses the toilet the articles on civil liberties and torture are mysteriously missing.
I have gotten the impression that having a copy of reason around is the way liberals and conservatives “prove” that they have open minds without having to have the literature of their true, complete opposites lying around. No liberal can have a copy of National Review in their bathroom–their friends would kill them. And no conservative can have Mother Jones in their bathroom, because their friends would kill them. reason is the compromise.
Plus–and Nick deserves a lot of credit for this–reason has gotten a rep for being kind of hip. After all, it attacks the status quo in almost all cases, which makes it rebellious, and therefore hip.
I can actually see how Hollywood conservatives, while disagreeing with the libertarian perspective on ‘national security’ issues, would be much more receptive to reason than, say, a Bible-thumping theocon from Alabama. The moderate right of Hollywood still generally falls into the whole secular/cosmopolitan cultural mindset that is also pervasive at reason. 24 is hardly “family values” conservative.
Should you really be proud of that?
“we’re all out of cilantro.”
“TELL ME WHERE THE CILANTRO IS OR I’LL KICK YOU IN THE FaCE AGAIN!”
Show dude bloody on floor giving up the location of cilantro.
Summary of every 24 episode I’ve seen.
I love 24, but the plots are more predictable each season!
Did they have toilet paper?
