To me it seems like a lame and desperate thing to say in an argument with a woman, and she is so obviously wrong here that lameness and desperation aren’t called for.

But judging by the negative rating I got, most people don’t have that reaction to the phrase, so I suppose you should take what I’m saying with a grain of salt…

Total agreement. I was just pointing out the absurdity of pursing punishment before conviction. It just amazes me that we are having to have the “prison should be punishment” argument before any punishment has been assigned. That argument has nothing to do with RF’s particular case. Kerry “Jenkum” Dougherty’s argument just seems symptomatic of a general disdain for anyone who appears to run afoul of the law, regardless of the findings of the actual trial. It’s as if she’s saying “punish first, ask questions later, then punish again.”

Ryan was a drink delivery person. If I’m correct, that’s pretty physical labor. You have to load up the dolly’s and pull cases of drinks off a truck and haul them inside to your customer. You do that several times a day and you get a pretty good workout.

I did that job for about 18 months, c.1990-91.

Every day I left the plant at 6 a.m. with 8,000 to 20,000 pounds of soft drinks on my truck, and returned anywhere from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. with zero. I picked up and set down every single case at least three times before it was on the shelf.

I was fresh out of the Army and in great shape, and I lost weight on that job. When’s the last time Kerry Dougherty lifted 60,000 pounds a day?

I’ve had correspondence with KD and was stunned at how condescending and smug she was. I remember thinking how I’d hate to be married to someone who treats a stranger the way she treated me. There was no polite disagreement, only sarcasm. She refuses to even acknowledge other viewpoints and justifies it by saying, “I’m a columnist, I don’t have to have all the facts. Kerry, if you resign your position at the Pilot and get a job doing public relations for the police department, you can write the exact same columns, you’ll probably make more money, AND you will be a credit rather than a disgrace to your chosen profession. Thomas Jefferson said a press but no government is better than a government but no press; he didn’t say that because he liked the idea of “journalists” serving as cheerleaders for corrupt people in positions of power. Journalists should defend the innocent, not make fat jokes about them.

On the bright side, the fact that the prosecution has to resort to making fat jokes suggests that even THEY know, deep down, that this is a dog of a case.
