Correction on that story about Morgan County Sheriff Greg Bartlett, he was sent to a federal prison where he was well fed, not his own jail.

This makes all the difference in the world, and something that had been bugging me about this story.

Federal judge, federal goons, federal prison.

I lived in Columbus during the 2000 race. Everytime Bush or Gore was in town (which seemed like all the time) they would close 670from downtown to the airport. Totally screw up everyone's commute, it didnt matter if you only ran on I-70 or 270 or 71 and never came close to 670, you were backed up forever. Truman used to go for walks on the public streets. I can understand running with police escorts clearing the left lane, but I do not understand closing the entire god damned highway.

TV news investigation finds that nearly 1,400 Atlanta* police officers have criminal records.

(*per Loren's clarification, this is apparently for GA as a whole.)

One has to ask: Are the criminal records from before or after they joined the police?

Nando: "It’s called Security Theater for a reason. They aren’t there to keep us more or less secure, they are there to make us FEEL like we’re more secure."

I love theatre, but this is one show I would prefer to skip. If I want a song and dance number, I'll go see Caberet. And what happened to that passenger was a horrible form of racial discrimination. He should've been paid more.

A couple of years ago Dick Cheney was visiting Seattle to do a private, closed-door Republican fund raiser. Asshole shut down I-5 during morning rush hour when he arrived to drive into Seattle, then shut down the I-90 bridge and I-405 during the afternoon commute to cross Lake Washington to go to Bellevue where the actual fund raiser was. Asshole didn't even have the courtesy to go directly from the airstrip to his final destination, he had to fuck up traffic in the entire metro area for the whole day. I say unless these pricks are on official government business, no motorcades allowed.

Correction on that story about Morgan County Sheriff Greg Bartlett, he was sent to a federal prison where he was well fed, not his own jail.

Also, he was released today after his lawyers presented an undisclosed plan to give his detainees meals that met USDA guidelines.

"Cult of the presidency watch: James Joyner says it’s time we stopped closing off neighborhoods shutting down cities in the name of presidential safety. Couldn’t agree more. Motorcade creep is out of control."

Mmm hmm. A revolt of the municipalities against the FedGov. More of this power flowing upward stuff, huh?

Then again, Etienne de La Boetie did some thinking back in the 1500s: http://www.lewrockwell.com/rothbard/rothbard78.html

"TV news investigation finds that nearly 1,400 [Georgia] police officers have criminal records."

Their off by a certain percentage, being the difference between that number and 100%. All government police officers are receivers of stolen goods -- tax dollars. They just haven't been convicted, and probably never will.

I've been to the gas station right next to that quick lube place several times in the past. It looks no different than any other used car and service shop to me. There is absolutely no way you could mistake that place for a salvage yard.

I've been thinking about the Presidential security stuff a bit lately. The conclusion I have come to is that if the level of security we see is necessary, then the President should not be allowed out of the Whitehouse for anything not essential to performing his official duties. The amount of expense and disruption of people's business is ridiculous. And usually for some political stunt or photo op.

#15 Mattocracy

One day Bill Richardson will run his car into a minivan with a bunch of kids going to soccer practice and then this will all hit the fan. Unfortunately, that’s what it takes for the public to put a politician in his/her place.

True, but even then everyone will still say how the "vast majority" of politicians are honest law abiding citizens.

In reality, unicorns are probably more common.

On the douchebag Sheriff siphoning off 50% of the prison food money into his own pocket...

"The ethics commission cited the state law allowing the practice and a previous legal opinion from Alabama's attorney general."

Methinks the "ethics commission" needs to look up the word "ethics".

Actually Indiana has the same law concering feeding prisoners, although that's gradually changing. They also can supplement thier income by the fact that they get half of any back taxes they collect (sort of a bounus for doing thier job). That has also changed in some counties (think it's more a voluntary rather than legal change)
