Sunday, January 4th, 2009So I’m pretty sure my Colts were just beaten by San Diego’s punter.
Kudos to the Chargers. Few people (including me) gave them much of a chance.

It was an awesome game!

I really wish I could offer some words of comfort, but being as how the Colts are one of my most hated enimies, I can’t feel anything but happy right now. Now, all I need is for the Giants to get knocked out of it, and I’ll be very happy indeed.
That was an insanely good game. Insanely good. Even if the Colts had won, I don’t think I’d have been disappointed, because there wasn’t a second of that game that wasn’t intensely exciting. It was well fought on both sides.
I still hate the sudden death rule, though, and I always have. I think it’d be better if both sides were guaranteed a possession. Whether that means adapting similar rules to overtime rules in College or adjusting the rules to something else, I don’t know. But far too often sudden death rests on who wins the toss, and that’s just not good, whether I benefit emotionally or not. NFL fans deserve better.
Still… man, what a great game.
Doesn’t matter that they were 8-8 in the season, everyone is 0-0 when the playoffs start.
Ditto #2 Chris Berez. Sudden death sucks. NCAA overtime is much better. I’m a Razorbacks fan, so I know all about college OT, but even the very protracted OT games are exciting as all get-out!
Sudden death is great.
I’m not just writing that to be contrary either.
Sudden death puts defense on the same plane as offense.
Want to win sudden death overtime?
Play good defense. You’ll win every time.
Three cheers for sudden death overtime!
I’m with Cynical. I think Sudden Death is the right answer for the pros. If you don’t like the idea of losing without getting a chance with the ball, you can either win it in regulation, or play good defense. I think the onus of Sudden Death has forced a lot of pro teams to be more aggressive at the end of the game, especially on the road.
Well, the winners of terrible divisions proved that they do deserve to be in the playoffs but neither of these teams could have won on the road (which is where they should have been if seeding was decided by record).
I have to admit, we never thought much of our season a 1 1/2 months ago. I’m very surprised.
Excellent! There is still an outside chance of a Cards-Bolts Superbowl!
I’m with Cynical completely. Sudden Death is great.
Hope tomorrows games are exciting too.
“So I’m pretty sure my Colts were just beaten by San Diego’s punter.”
Yep, Darren Sproles accounted for 328 yards for the Chargers but it was the punter that won it for them.
You know Warren, I’m kinda rooting for that.
Both of these teams were expected to lose. I’d love for them both to get to the big game.
0 for 2 so far Radley…let’s see how your picks fare tomorrow…
That is one hell of a punter.
I kinda think the Colts were beaten by the refs.
Great game. Sorry ’bout yer Colts. I’ve always liked Manning.
Anyhoo…. Sudden death sux ass.
The best thing about football is the strategy, and there’s not much strategy in sudden death overtime. I say overtime should consist of one more quarter with each team getting two time-outs and one challenge. Flip a coin, then play fifteen more minutes. If by the end of that fifteen minutes there remains a tie score, call it a tie in regular season and in the playoffs do a sudden death.
Just MHO.
Don’t get me started on the BCS though. I started to on the other thread, but then worried about my blood pressure and stopped. It’s all messed up. And I’m a lifelong OU fan too.
Cheers.
Anybody who loves football saw two very good games yesterday. They saw what playoff games are supposed to be: Two teams showing up to prove they are the better one.
Anybody who has watched most of the college 1A Bowls can e pleased this year for similar reasons, and one other. This year — yet again — more than any other, screams for an end to the terrible CS monopoly and a playoff system like every other football program has. SO that undefeated teams like Utah are not relegated to second class status by “experts” but rather have a similar chance as any other team to earn the crown.
Sorry about your Colts- as all have said, the Colts/Chargers game was an exciting game- the Colts did not play well- Peyton received the MVP which he deserved. Peyton had a tough year and it looks like Tom Brady is following in his footsteps. It is tough to lose as the Pats well know.
This NFL season was a crap shoot this year.
Steelers and Panthers are the teams to watch now.
WTF?!?! Thats not how its supposed to happen. My colts got beat by their rush defense, not the refs or the chargers or their punter. 328 all purpose yards for sproles? Ridiculous.
I agree with #14: the game hinged on the large assist by the refs. It appears that every San Diego spot gained a half yard, and Indy’s penalties gave the game away on the tying and winning drives.
John Madden said that the officials were the same ones who cost the Chargers in the game versus Denver in Week 2. Perhaps they tried to make the error up in the playoffs. All I know is that if the officiating remains constant, the Chargers are destined to win the Super Bowl.
I hate that officiating played such a big part of the game but with the exception of an intentional grounding no call on Manning followed by the ticky tack PI against the Chargers on the next play I really can’t see any problem calls.
The Colts D killed themselves in OT. Just stupid stupid penalties….
What a great game!!!!!
Civil Sense: Madden was wrong. The refs in the Chargers – Broncos game in week 2 were Ed Hochuli’s crew. That crew was working the Baltimore-Miami game today.
Well, Radley, unless the Vikings pull off a miracle, it looks like Philly will win (although they have far from dominated this game). The bright side is you’ll have tied Simmons, 2-2. Simmons picked Colts/Vikings to win, whereas you had Colts/Philly.
All in all, you’re probably not the next Brandon Lang; but I’d still like very much for you to pick the games in the next round as well– whether they agree with Simmons or not. I’ve always loved when you take a brief break to talk about football.
Ugh, wait a second, I got that all mixed up. You’re still tied with Simmons, but my analysis was wrong. I implied you were wrong about picking Philly, when in fact you were not (Simmons had the Vikings). And both you and Simmons were wrong about the Colts, and you were wrong about Atlanta and Simmons was wrong about Minnesota.
Sorry about that.
Indy needs to understand once and for all time that the road to the title runs through or over San Diego!
The last 6 meetings have turned out too well for indy either, have they?
A most excellent game for sure.
Boo hoo sudden death, boo hoo road games. If you can’t run or stop the run, you won’t win in the playoffs and the Colts haven’t done either all year long. Easy to see this one coming.

Sudden death sux ass. The best thing about football is the strategy, and there’s not much strategy in sudden death overtime.
It’s still football, though. By what magic does the strategy disappear?
Are you saying that during regulation, an offense might try to go 3-and-out because, what the hey, there’ll more chances later? Or a defense will give up an easy score because it won’t end the game?
You are confusing me, Pogue.
Chris Berez,
Can i ask you as an obvious Patriots fan, and one who apparently hates the Giants and Colts (insert my gratuitous taunt at you here because I am a Giants fan) can I ask where you stand on the issue of the Pats being a widely hated team amongst NFL fans?
Seems to me that most of my Pats fans friends and the peopel I hear on the radio here in Boston were oh so upset and perplexed that the Pats were hated, yet they now all insist on hating the Giants. I am all for teams hating other teams in sports its awesome, and I would never complain about people hating on the Giants other than to taunt them back by calling them haters, but I would just love to hear (for once) a Pats fan be a little consistent about people hating on their team by saying they understand and don’t really mind or care.
As for sudden death I kinda don’t mind it. But a way to perhaps expand strategy would be for a modified version where on the very first possession of OT, ONLY a TD would end the game on the spot, but a field goal would allow the other team a possession to match or win. Anything after that would be sudden death of course. That sounds kinda cool yo me, though maybe too gimmicky.

I think it’s because Boston fans were so used to having everyone’s sympathy for so long. NY was the villain everyone hated, not us. Then as the Pats kept winning, they started getting a aura of arrogance about them. As fans, we didn’t really pick up on it because we were busy being happy and it never occurred to us that people might be getting sick of our teams winning and our fans. So one day, we looked up and we were suddenly the bad guys and it was just a bit of a shock.
Personally, I’ve never had a problem with being hated: it’s just a part of sports. And I agree with you that it’s hypocritical of Boston fans to complain about being hated. For me, the only time I’ve ever really gotten angry over that hatred was when Brady was injured this season, and we got all this footage and these pictures of bars in NY where people were celebrating. And it wasn’t just NY, people all over were cheering and celebrating a potentially career-threatening injury– and not only cheering it, but rooting for it to be career-ending. That’s the only time I’ve ever actually gotten pissed off and felt like people were taking their hate too far. But I can only speak for myself. Hope that helps. :)
As for sudden death, you suggestions work fine for me. I just don’t like that if you win the toss, all you have to do is get within FG range and that’s that.
