What’s great is he’s looking at the other cars, probably thinking “you know, with this baby we’re in, I could finally catch one of those!”

Hate to be a nanny, but it’s really bad for their eyes to let them stick their heads out the car window.
At least, that’s what I was told in 1970 and have believed since. I know you are a nice dog owner. Am I wrong?

My dogs also love to do that. Consider how acute their sense of smell is. My guess is that all of the air being forced into their nose is like a symphony of smell.
And, maybe it feels like flying.
Here is my question. If they love the wind so much(and I know they do)why does blowing in their faces make them so annoyed?
If it was this afternoon an hour north of Baltimore, then I wouldn’t be too worried about the dog’s eyes. Radley probably wasn’t moving more than . . . oh. . . 0.5 mph.
My dogs love doing that too, but I don’t let them stick their heads out the window since I have a two door and it would mean having them sit in my lap (they are 1/2 Shepherd and 1/2 Husky).
Is that a boxer or a pitt? We have an APBT and are getting ready to move down from Towson to Baltimore proper. Makes me a bit nervous because my brother was BCP and I get the feeling, while more tolerable then most police, they have an especial hatred for Bully breads. Any chance people have any info on the incidences of the BCP and puppycide? Happy Holidays to everyone, btw.
P.S. my puppy also loves sticking his head out the window, never heard of it being bad for their eyes but I’ve always been cautioned against sticking objects out the window (including dog heads); nasty precedent for them getting hurt (maybe that’s just a coincidental bias, family being mostly police, EMT’s).
I’d heard something similar about the eyes. We bought our Boxer a pair of Doggles (google them). Not only are her eyes protected, but everyone gets a good laugh out of it, too.

A dog sticking his head out the car window is bad in the sense that debris off the road can get in his eyes. I never let mine do it.
I will, however, check out them doggles.
Isabel’s mother was some kind of Jack Russell/Rat Terrier mix and her father was an English Bulldog. I call her a “terribull.”
And, don’t worry, she only puts her head out the window when we’re in line to pay a toll and barely moving. She gets lots of attention from the booth attendants.
So what was the outcome of your disobedience to your masters, The State?

Hi, Agitatrix! That is a great photo! One of my dogs hates the car, and has to literally be dragged to it and lifted into it. Only dog I’ve ever heard of that hates car trips. My other pup – too small to reach the seat from the ground – flings herself up at it, anyway, in her zeal to GetInTheCarOhBoyOhBoy!!!!!
