Top of the World

Beautiful night photo of Mt. Everest from a vantage point few of us will ever see—base camp for the mountain’s climbers.  It’s part of a terrific series of year-end photos from the Boston Globe’s wonderful Big Picture blog.  By the way, let’s give the Big Picture blog some credit.  It’s one of the rare examples of an old media giant using the web in an interesting and innovative way.

    How awesome it must be to be able to see so many stars! I look up at night and can barely see the moon thru the light pollution.

    Speaking of which, it supports the use of keys (just press the letter on your keyboard) to scroll through the pictures:

    j = next picture
    k = previous picture

    This makes looking at the photos a lot more fun. Give it a try, but be aware you have to wait for all the photos to load first, and this takes a little time…

    Beautiful, thank you. Reminds of of my home state Alaska and the amazing Winter skies. The stars hang like diamonds and add the dancing ribbons of the Northern Lights, magnificent.

    Happy Holidays Radley,

    Did a lot of climbing in Colorado in my youth. Nothing beats the majesty of a clear night sky above 10,000 feet, the Milky Way arching overhead and the stars shining in a multitude of colors.

    This is simply a beautiful picture. Thanks for putting it up.
