The fact that conservatarians (i.e., the right-wingers who stole the name “libertarian” from the anarchists and anarcho-syndicalists) hate Mr. Lind’s article so much is in my opinion a good argument for it.

I think if you check you’ll find out that a heavy majority of those Southern auto workers are evil white people.

Most inane article indeed. Perhaps Lou Dobbs wrote under a pen name. Really shows that liberals will pull out McCain’s “Country First” mentality when it suits them best. I guess me and my Tacoma are just a couple of America hating southerners who are still mad about the Civil War and want to destroy the north. Because after all, this guy’s regional bigotry is ok compared to the bigotry he accuses all the rest of us of having.

God that list of Music missed a lot of good stuff that got released. When lil’ wayne gets on a top 50 list I’m immediately suspicious, when that album beats Opeth’s Watershed release, or Amon Amarth’s Twilight of the Thunder God, I’m done.

The “South’s Economic War on the North” article was very interesting. The author, Michael Lind, reveals many of his own biases and fears in very vivid detail (way too many to discuss in a blog comment!). He sees that the South is obviously more business friendly than the North and instead of pressing Northern states to trim their costs he wants to hanndicap the South. This dumbass thinks that Massachusetts is going to turn into backwoods Mississippi if MA becomes a cheaper place to do business. Unreal.

This article is an explicit complaint about cheap coloured labour from the South competing with honest white labour in the North, as things were put in the past (at the time when the South “took over” the textile industry, for example).

How about reconstructing the NORTH without bailouts? It seems to me that the deconstruction of the U.S. economy has already happened.

The north’s model is way obsolete already and anything that tries to keep the status quo just makes it worse in the end.

I’ll go ahead and put words in the authors mouth: “Them damn southerners just need to be more like us northerners and then everything will be OK.”

The novel legal theory used by Mr. Addington might be the scope of power given to Mr. Clinton and his surrogates after he left office in 2001.

As far as inane articles – any article mentioning “senate” and “Caroline Kennedy” is inane. She may be nice personally, but she is inexperienced politically and just got hammered for her poor showing upstate. There has to be a better choice than her. OTOH, with all the potential conflicts with ex-POTUS Clinton’s donor list, perhaps Senator Clinton’s confirmation is not a done deal.

If it’s “[t]he most inane article you’ll read this week,” why would I bother reading it? There’s something to be said for not encouraging the stupidity of others…

I think one should bother (if not to read it entirely, to at least skim over it) because it’s important to be familiar with the various types of nonsense held by large portions of the population. Same reason one should be familiar with the writings of people like Bill Kristol and Naomi Klein.

I didn’t grow up in the US, so I’m not all that well informed about the reasons for the Civil War. The little I have learned (in communist schools, so it’s automatically suspect) was that southern states seceded because of economic imperialism imposed on them by the North, such as higher taxes. My teacher actually compared the Civil War to the Independence War, with one difference: in the more recent war, the secessionists lost. Please correct me if my teachings have been wrong.

Given what little I know, I have the feeling that it was people like Lind who provoked the Civil War. People who don’t want to compete with a more efficient model, and always try to limit the efficient model to the extent where their favored model becomes more economically viable to the manufacturers, even though not to the customers. Let’s just hope more people than before have enough common sense not to listen to Lind & Co…
