NOVA did a show on Dr. Harold Edgerton back in '85, who invented the strobe light. He had a little portable machine he'd been using for years to win bar bets by making water flow backward. He also demonstrated the power of the strobe lights used for aerial photography during WWII. He hung a sheet of newspaper a couple of feet from the strobe. One flash and the paper burst into flames.
