That’s certainly where most of it is. But there’s no shortage of problems at the federal level, either. See the federal prosecutions of pain doctors, for example. Or the Colomb case I wrote about for reason. Or U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan.

Good column, Radley. Thanks for resisting the temptation to “appeal with him to compromise with the Republicans on the issues where I agree with them.” That would have been lame.

I wonder, though, about your final suggestion, that Pres. Obama use the pardon power to right wrongful or unjust prosecutions. Isn’t the problem of prosecutorial misconduct primarily at the state level, where the president has no power to pardon?

One more: Reducing the amount of regulations dealing with taxes. That alone would “reduce” the taxes we pay. Reduce the complexity, eliminate the AMT, eliminate the death tax, etc.

Good list. I’m surprised about one absence: rolling back the War on Some Drugs. There’s no cause whatsoever for federal raids on California-licensed medical marijuana facilities or for the outrageous persection (as you’ve documented) of pain management MDs.

Yeah, that’s obviously a typo.

It should say “should not be a federal jobs program.”

It’s not a typo. “federal jobs program” = “federal program whose primary purpose is to make work so that the unemployed can have jobs”. The top 100 priorities of our security apparatus should be security related. Having the security apparatus be a place were someone can get a cushy government job defeats the point of security.

Of course, in general, cushy government jobs defeat the point of providing services to citizens. But I’m less worried about a collection of do nothing assholes in the DMV than a collection of the same set of useless fools in the TSA.
