Alaska’s Voters Pass on Accountability

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

With only early voting ballot counting remaining, convicted felon Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) leads challenger Mark Begich by by 3,300 votes.

And Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) also has a stunning 17,000 vote lead, despite trailing in all of the pre-election polling.

Maybe they decided not to hand the Demorats any more power?

Maybe they care more about goodies extorted from the rest of the country than the rampant corruption of their state’s entire political system.

Maybe they understand that after if Senator Stevens WINDS, then RESIGNS, Gov. Sarah Palin will appoint the next Alaska Senator:

    Herself…..?

Suuposedly the rule in Alaska changed recently. There should be a special election if he is removed from office. She might still get to nominate his temporary replacement, but it won’t be for his full term.

Can he vote on legislation from prison? I hate to be in this position where I want to see a 85 year old man in the slammer – but, geeze, he so badly deserves what he gets. I can’t believe they just re-elected a convicted felon.

An 84 year old career politician facing a looming Federal corruption indictment has the arrogance and hubris to run for Re-Election

I heard an interview where a lady said she and many others in the state didn’t care what a bunch of elites and outsiders thought about the Senator. The interviewer asked specifically if she meant the jury that convicted him, and she said yes.

Maybe the AIP is on to something here after all…

Is it not strange that convicted felons aren’t permitted to vote, but can be reelected to national office?

If Alaska voted Sen Stevens out then a dem would have that seat. Giving them more power they don’t need. He wins, resigns, and another Repub gets appointed.

In my district we voted in a state senator who dies 2 weeks before the election. We will now have a another special election.

Thomas, if felons weren’t allowed to hold national office, the majority of our current congress would be ineligible…oh, you said convicted.

I am officially even MORE embarrassed to be an Alaskan now than I was when Uncle Ted was indicted, then convicted of 7 felonies. We Alaskans truly have to be the most selfish, moronic, insular and dim-witted people in the country. I’m sorry for continuing to inflict our brand of libertarian-socialism on you all in the lower 48.

If Ted resigns or is expelled, then we will have to have a special election within 90 days. I think if that happens, we will see Mark Begich vs. The Well-Coiffed Hockey Mom… with predictably disastrous results…

    Alaska Girl:

Sorry, but we in Minnesota got you beat. That fundie, lunatic, whack-job Michelle Bachman got re-elected.

    Doom on us all!

But they’ll take our tax dollars even though they have resource that could cover their state revenue needs without it.

Alaska is a classic example of the “Real America” bullshit. “We’re all rugged individualists that don’t need any welfare pull ourselves up by our bootstraps. Hey where’s my oil money? and why aren’t we getting federal money for our bridge?”

    F-you too lady.

<— Alaskan, also jaw dropping embarassed that so many people voted for Stevens. It’s like they owe him something? Uh, that’s why he got a paycheck (and bribes to boot).
It’s a really close call, small gap initially but 40-50k in early and absentee votes. I have my fingers crossed.

Dantes? Bite me. You must be conveniently forgetting that everyone pays taxes, everyone got their piece along the way. Ak is late to the game and a fairly new state, remember? I’m sure there are lots of places in rural america that live pretty sadly but our towns can’t exactly drive down the road to walmart to get what they need whenever they need it. Pork, you bet. 100% agree. You likely had a few bridges to nowhere in the past but lots of states were doing it, we are merely finally getting around to getting our funding and everyone is watching more closely. Does it cost a lot? Uh, duh, it’s way the hell off the beaten track and costs an arm and a leg for groceries, much less a road.
Btw, I’m from Anchorage, and I don’t want KABATA either. In fact, a WHOLE lot of people think it’s a waste of money, but someone wants their name on something. Those other bridges? Yup, we all laughed, but we also voted the stupid Gov out that those bridges were intended for. And Palin? JC, I’m begging for a recall.

I’m really not sure how to comment on that last bit. Are you jealous? Did your state blow all it’s oil/mineral rights? Did your legislature not have a bright moment and decide to share it back to the people instead of blowing it on shiny radar traps? We got lucky with our resources. We got luckier that some wise men with big hearts decided the people could spend royalties better than temporary legislators. If you were in some farm subsidized state I’d understand your selfloathing, if not, your just being bitter about something you obviously don’t really know anything about. You must REALLY hate Hawaii that produces next to nothing yet somehow draws all those tourists so they can pay income taxes. Next you can explain what your plan for boot strappin Texas is, you know, the place where it’s cheaper to have a latino do your job and screw him right before paychecks come out because he’s an illegal. (or are we done with the stereotypes)?
