So he didn’t go to jail. And maybe he shoud have. I agree with Zeb: either way, it’s a non-issue. As a Senator, McCain should either work to put Ayers behind bars–if he really thinks an old hippie is that dangerous–or STFU about it already and address some real issues. Like, I don’t know–the economy, maybe?

Face it, Ayers is a non-issue, and if you try to pretend it is, you are full of shit. Everyone already knows about it and the only reason to bring him up is to use “terrorism” and “Obama” in the same sentence. And the only reason to mention terrorism in such a context is to make people think of nasty a-rabs and 911.

Bill Ayers is not “reformed” or even “repentant”. In fact he wishes he had done more, and still supports the goals of the Weathermen – violent overthrow of the American system. But like most cowards he’s decided its better to be a tenured professor and preach violence than take the risk of actually doing it.

It’s a good thing that elderly couple didn’t have a dog. Otherwise the cops would have had to shoot it as it was flee–er, attacking and then leave the corpse with the wife while they took her husband to the hoosegow.

And thoughtless throwaway lines like that give tacit approval to the government’s actions that make involuntary cowards out of all of us. “Give me Liberty or give me Death.”

This isn’t to say that the long ago deeds of Bill Ayres aren’t despicable, or that having failed to repent he should be accepted into polite society. Insofar as Barack Obama abetted Ayres’ social standing, criticizing Obama is fair. But the McCain campaign has exploited the fact that Bill Ayres was a terrorist to imply that their opponent is sympathetic to our enemies in the War on Terror, a campaign tactic so irresponsible that even GOP partisans should forcefully denounce it, and for a reason that hasn’t anything to do with fairness.

Unrepentant? Try more like he really wishes he could have killed more people. Let’s call a spade a spade here. There is unrepentant, and then there are people who would have done a lot worse had God or fate not stopped them.

That saddest part is that many anti-pot people would use it illegally if they had to. My grandmother, who is a dyed-in-the-wool republican and thinks all drugs are evil (except the ones you pay big money for from the pharmacy), said to me one day after finishing a round of chemo for lymphoma, “If I ever have to go through this again, I am coming to you for the pot. I know you know where to get it.”

I feigned ignorance. But at the same time I found it pretty amusing.
