Life, Satire Inch Closer
Monday, September 29th, 2008Longtime readers will recognize that headline. It was part of a series where we’d illustrate how politics has moved beyond parody. If ever there were a video clip to illustrate the point, it’s this one.

So was the original interview so ridiculous they just duplicated verbatim on SNL? Of course, knowing the quality of SNLs writing the last several years maybe they should just parrot the dumb things said in Washington and they’d get better ratings.
Yeah, that’s what they did. As far as I can tell, the only thing Fey added to the routine was implicit permission for the audience to laugh.
I concur that SNL is pretty bad (again) and I rarely watch. But I think it is telling that they don’t even have to manufacture the dialog. Even with Bush they came up with things he didn’t say, but that sounded like something he might say (strategery?)
Not since Dan Quayle has politics offered up somebody this good at mocking themselves.
On another note, I think Gilda and Phil and John up in SNL heaven just created Sarah Palin out of thin air for Tina Fey. It is almost impossible that someone that parody-able (word, lol?) would wind up front and center for a VP run in possibly the most historical and key election in generations. Palin has to either be a gift from the gods, or a robot built by Lorne Michaels to help save a dying show by bringing back a popular cast member and handing her a spot on impression to run with.
sarah palin: william shatner in a dress.
Instead of Palin debating Biden, the McCain campaign should pay Tina Fey to stand in for her. It would be funny to see if anyone noticed.
Is there anything more cliche than criticizing recent SNL writing? No one ever seems to like SNL writing now, but they did like it at some point.
Hey, don’t diss Shatner that way.

Every time I watch a clip from the REAL interview I am struck by how often Palin glances down at her lap to look at her notes. She needs crib sheets to sound even THIS intelligent. At least Tina Fey looked Amy Poehler in the eyes.
Of course it could be, if not using written talking points she could sound more intelligent, but she would wander too far off the McCain platform. I guess. That could happen.
And everybody knows SNL hasn’t been the same since Jim Henson’s muppets had a regular spot. It’s been all down hill from there.
