Police serving a search warrant in Haltom City, Texas say an officer had no choice but to shoot and kill an “aggressive”–wait for it–Jack Russell terrier.

Radley, obviously that was no ordinary Jack Russel terrier.

Rather, that was the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered canine you could ever set eyes on!

That canine had a vicious streak a mile wide! It was a killer!

He’d do you up a treat, mate.

He had huge, sharp– eh– he could leap about– look at the bones!

Police said, “…a preliminary report on the incident showed that the animal was aggressive.”

Yanno, it occurs to me that they’re applying the same standard to dogs that they apply to people: failure to be immediately submissive is “aggressive”.

Someone should teach all dogs what “POLICEFREEZE!GETONNAFLOOR!” means.

Forty pound Jack Russell? That dog must have been friggin’ obese.

To put it in perspective, this is my dog, he’s 35 pounds. Rommel be his name, Heeler and Dachshund mix.

Not to justify the actions of the cop, I still carry nerve damage from a 12 pound dog that popped my hand a good one.

But then again, ya know, these cops on these SWAT raids go in there so full of adrenaline you’d swear they were on meth themselves. Hair trigger fingers.

un-fuckin-believable. were there no newborn kittens around to waste? the day will come - probably pretty soon - when one of these barney fife dipshits shoots the wrong guy’s dog. or bird. or guinea pig.

and that guy proceeds to start hunting cops. i rather look forward to that day. i am so goddamn *sick* of these power-mad assholes killing animals because they think it’s fun!

You know, it wasn’t all that far in the past when I would have considered that to be an extreme position.

That day has long since passed.

wondering if they can get government compensation to cover the costs of a new dog and disposal of the old one? seems to be a trend these days.

It is a FELONY to kill a POLICE dog in most states.
Some puppies are more sacred than others. And,
Legislators have no sense of relative values (well,
I’ll bet that Mayor in Maryland now does).

The POLICE think all civilians are shitbirds and most
Legislators seem to agree (unless it’s the first week
in November of an election year).

I honestly wonder if I’d be a cop killer if I had my gun in my hands and I saw a cop shoot my dog. It’s pretty hard for me to imagine not reacting EXTREMELY emotionally.

As a psychologist, I think killing non-threatening animals in this manner should be an exclusionary criteria for law enforcement.

I don’t particularly care for their practices, but is PETA involved at all in these incidents? I sent them an angry email earlier after browsing their site and not finding any mention.

They lost my favor years back when they bullied the rightful owner of PETA.com (people eating tastey animals) out of his site.

Wheter or not I feel that they are laregly a terrible bunch of people, they should be involved. Especially seeing as they could swing some weight that would count for alot more in these sorts of happenings rather than global policy.

Whose side do you think PETA would be on? They oppose pet ownership, and take every opportunity to euthanize those pets they “rescue”.

I don’t mean to defend the cop here, Zeus knows I love dogs and would never want any harm to come to them (I have a 40 lb black lab mix that is just adorable!), but I did get bit once by a classmate’s Jack Russell when I was in high school. All I did was walk into the house and give my friend one of those shoulder-to-shoulder hugs and I guess the dog thought I was attacking his owner or some shit and bit my calf.

How bad is it that I read that story and think ‘Well, at least this time the dog that ran away didn’t get shot…’

There has to be a typo in the article.

There is no fucking way a jack russell terrier is 40 pounds.

    4 pounds yes.

What about the last part of the article where it talks about the previous dog shooting — how the hell can you shoot and MISS, at close range no less, an 80-lb pit bull?

As Ginger Dan pointed out, the last part of the article actually seems MUCH worse.

“Haltom City police were involved in another dog shooting in June.

Kevin Valenzuela was shot by a Haltom City police officer’s stray bullet intended for his dog. Officers had gone to Valenzuela’s North Richland Hills house in the 3400 block of Willowcrest Drive to arrest his friend Jaime Moreno on suspicion of burglary, police have said.

A Haltom City officer fired two shots at Valenzuela’s 80-pound pit bull terrier when the dog charged at him, officials have said. The dog was grazed, and Valenzuela was shot in his left leg and grazed on his right.”

seriously, you “graze” the dog you’re targeting with one shot but hit the other guy TWICE?

Your average cop can’t hit the broad side of a barn from 20 feet without help. The pit bull story doesn’t surprise me even a little.

I have to say that if I were a cop in Texas, I would think THREE times before shooting somebody’s dog. That’s the kind of behavior that’s likely to get you into a whole HEAP o’ trouble in the Lone Star State.

Reference the Saw movies (I think #1 or 2) where the cops were raiding the main villain’s lair, only to get their ankles cut off and caught in an electrocution cage.

Not meth, but steroids, which amounts to the same thing temperament-wise.

XYZ123, don’t knock Barney Fife, man! If our law enforcement agencies were comprised of Andy Griffiths and Barney Fifes, people would have much greater respect for the police and we’d live in a much better world. I guess I’m biased, though, I watch TAGS every day, it’s still the funniest show on TV, IMHO.
