'The 1/2 hour news hour' was horrible BTW.

The Daily Show may make fun of everyone auggie but John Stewart has admitted that each election cycle he wants to get the Democrats elected ... he said it 4 years ago about Kerry. At least he's honest about it.

My god I LOOOOOOVE the "special rights" argument.

Has anyone ever pointed out to these a-holes that by their very logic, gays wouldn't be getting "special rights," but rather we'd ALL be getting the right to marry people of the same sex. And who wants to oppose more rights for EVERYONE?

The daily show is the funniest thing on tv ever. The fact that they also call politicians (from all parties) on their b.s. just makes it even better. They work with what they get and the folks at the RNC gave them plenty of ammo. Classic.

You know, democrats just don’t get it. The only thing belittling the other side will get you is resentment. Funny? Absolutely, effective? No.

Maybe they're trying to open the populations' eyes to the fact that it's all bullshit. Republican, democrat, doesn't matter.

1,200 population Baraga, MI, for me.

"Too bad conservatives don’t have the comedians on their side to push their points …. at least Penn and Teller do a good job against liberals …."

Penn and Teller don't exactly spend all their time bashing liberal views. And conservatives do have comedians who do just that (is the "The 1/2 hour news hour" still on?), they just aren't funny because they don't get that "the Daily Show" are going for a laugh first and any political point a distant second, whereas the Dennis Millers of the world seem to have it the other way round.

G.O.D., I too have much to learn, especially since I don't attend one of "those Christian churches." Actual conversation from my college years:

Mechanic: "You go to Church, little man?"
Me: "No, but I go to a Synagogue if that makes you feel better."
Mechanic: "Nah. You go to Church little man!"

But that was back when I was going to Temple. Nowdays I just fuck my neighbor while stoned on meth....Oh wait....."Although meth has generally been associated with white, male, blue-collar workers in rural areas of the western United States, with meth's spread to the East Coast there's now more diversity among users. " (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/meth/faqs/)

Guido, I don't think you'll find any easy answers. As you point out, there is no easy way to define where cities become suburbs and suburbs become rural. In many cities you can go 10 miles from downtown in one directions and be in a rural area but 20 miles the other say and still be in fairly dense suburbs, so those "metropolitan area" populations are pretty useless. There's also the added complexity of the dem/rep divide being very different in Concord, Birmingham, and Malibu; e.g. I grew up in the rural deep south and to this day, Democratic machine politics are still strong on the local level, yet they're the most reliable Republican presidential voters in the country.

Here's a couple links you might find interesting:

Good thing they told me what "small town values" are. Here I am, living in Seattle with my liberal west coast values, fucking my dog and gay neighbor instead of my wife, not fishing, sticking forks in electrical outlets, causing divorces, locking my door an leaving my cow in the street and worshiping Vishnu.

Common sense sounds like a MUCH better idea!

Question?

I have been curious of late about the actual population numbers comparing "small town" or "rural" populations vs. "urban" or "metropolitan" populations. I checked the census bureau:
http://www.census.gov/population/www/pop-profile/profiledynamic.html
As far as I can tell couldn't find this difficult statistic. Difficult because how do you classify a city like St. Louis, MO, for instance, which is spread out containing something like 45% living in "rural" areas yet only a couple of miles outside of the city core.
The reason I ask? When I see this push from the right to defend small town values and gear their retoric toward them, I feel the need to know how many people we are talking about. Later with that info we could talk in more specifics. Such as where the majority of the GDP comes from, race populations, the dreaded religious beliefs etc.
A little help please.......

The whole point of living in a small town is being able to have your kids run wild while growing up and the worst thing that happens is the neighbors tell you what your kids are doing instead of the cops. And no one ever calls the police. Who knew Republicans were libertarians?

How about this for small town values?

Where you don't have to rely upon the government for protection because you have an assortment of firearms handy including a Magnum .88 under the bed. It shoots through schools.

bobzbob, I think you're laboring under a misapprehension. The clip is from "The Daily Show", which is a comedy show, produced by Comedy Central. It is not, as you seem to believe, some sort of political advertisement aimed at increasing support for the Democrats. Being funny is the *point*.
