Alaska’s Ghost Boats

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

I have a soft spot for things that have been abandoned–buildings, cars, factories, entire towns. So when we stumbled upon a graveyard of retired boats in Seward, I kept an eye out for more over the remainder of our trip. Click on the photo for a slide show.

Great post, wonderful pics! Gotta share this with folks at DailyBoater.com

Good photos. You have a good eye to make things interesting.

I would disagree, though, that all of the boats are abandoned. The trawler with the new Chevy (I think its a Chevy – had a few glasses of wine tonight) beside it is most likely being used as a residence, even if it appears abandoned. I may be wrong, but that’s down by Homer, right?

That tidbit aside, thank you for showing this state in such a light. That peaceful, cloudy, somewhat chilly feeling is a big reason I live here.

Star Destroyer is an awesome name for a boat.
It’s one of the few good names for boats.

#2 — yes, it is being used as a residence. Which I guess means isn’t technically abandoned — just as a functional boat.

Those are some excellent photos. You’ve learned the new camera well.

Nice work Radley. I found the boat name Proud Mary rather nice. Even though she is old and rotting she is still standing tall.

Wow, what a treat! Thanks, Radley. You took me to another world with those photos . . . and I really needed that today. Just terrific stuff . . .

Radley, I’ve missed your camera info. I’m considering a digital SLR, so I’m interested: what equipment, incl lens type, were you using up there? BTW I spent 3 months in AK in 1990 backpacking, mountaineering, sea kayaking. A wonderful experience! (Back in Kodachrome 64 days!) Oh, yes…your photo composition is exceptional!

Some of those boats are more abandoned than others. Fine job catching that clear light though…

Do you find yourself with an urge to rescue the abandoned objects? Obviously not boats in Alaska, but perhaps smaller things closer to home.
