    From the linked article:

Matthew Yglesias asks of Kagan’s World War II analogy: “If we launch a war with Russia — which would seem to be the point of busting out the analogy — then how are we going to find the time to launch wars with Iran and China?”

I would find his sarcasm humorous, except the possiblity is present. I am far far far more scared of my government at home and abroad than I am of any foreign government.

No worries. With Bush in office… Russia attacking Georgia will just cause GWB to amass troops just outside Atlanta.

What, no jokes about Medvedev’s March to the Sea?

I really don’t understand Russia’s interest here…oh wait…Chechnya is next door..Oohhh…from one disputed region to the next. Nice. Very neocon: bomb ‘em until they get the government right…

People don’t believe in racism in the states when it is rampant everywhere else.

Even if we weren’t already over extended and had all of our troops sitting on the tarmac packed, armed, and ready to ship out, we will not go into a conflict where we would be toe to toe with Russians.

For neocon jingos to castigate Russia for ginning up a war to… wait for it… take control of oil, is chutzpah illustrated.

Paging Buck Turgidson: “20, 30 million casualties, tops!”

Russia has a real army, a real air force, a real navy and 20,000 nuclear weapons. It’s not board game, even though what’s left at the end could fit in a small box if the huffing, puffing 101st Keyboard Commandos get their way. Bush and Cheney can’t be THAT insane, can they?

I tend to agree Dave, but you just never know with W. Mix in the Dems, who seem like they are all sharing the same backbone and you just don’t know what could happen.

It appears that Cheney is more blatantly in charge than usual.

It’s reported that he said Russia’s actions “must not go unanswered”.

We’re not going to war with Russia or Iran or North Korea. Can Bush and Cheney be crazy enough to go to war over this!? No, they aren’t. It’s obvious we don’t have the troops to do it and its obvious the American people won’t accept it. They aren’t going to try.

I read the comments above and the comments in the link and think to myself, this is just another instance for people to take jabs at GWB and neocons over and over and over again. It’s futile and juvenile, like trying to beat off with a limp dick. Brow beating our enemies and continuously making snide remarks about their intelligence and sanity is a tactic of the Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity. We shouldn’t stoop to their level.

Anyone thinking that NATO might be marching in real soon? Georgia was pushing for entry into the NATO club…it is feasible that this might be one of those “coalition” type things…grrr.

Georgia never had a chance. Their Army makes the Good Humor men look like stormtroopers. And to have Mother Russia come walking in? Jeebus.

I spent time in the Adriatic trying to prevent one ethnicity from wiping out another. This is bad. And its getting worse….

Hmmmm….the consensus here seems to be that when a resurgent, imperialistic Russia invades a western-leaning democracy, what we should be worried about is our use of tough language to condemn the act?

The best argument you can make right now is that due to the unpopularity of the war in Iraq, our words don’t carry much weight with autocrats since they don’t think we can back up our words with action. But to condemn the defense of liberal democracy?

Are you such statists that you don’t see liberal democracy worthy of being defended regardless of borders? Are you so divorced from reality and blinded my ideology that you see everything in terms of evil neo-cons? I’d say yes given your comments.

The only democracy I care to see defended with American blood is that of the United States.

As it stands right now, if another country invaded the U.S., we’d be hard pressed to get our troops back from all the places they don’t belong to defend the only borders that matter.

In that sense, I’m a major statist.

meh. given that we didn’t invade cambodia to halt *actual* genocide; or didn’t invade rwanda to halt *actual* genocide; or haven’t invaded sudan to halt *actual* genocide …

i’d say the precedent is set and the track record is clear.

even if he wanted to, bush wouldn’t send troops to georgia. for all the high-minded speechifying on the far left and far right about loving democracy and the sacred right of self-determination, america will see no point in sending our guys over there to get shot at.

iraq was somewhat different, whether you’ll admit it or not. bush had to do SOMEthing big after 9-11, and iraq – having radar-painted our planes and fired the occasional missiles at them, also known as acts of war – iraq was handy and a relatively easy sell.

but please! don’t mind me! i’ll let y’all get back to your dark fantasies of the omnipotent neocon cabal, in cahoots with the evil bankers no doubt, plotting world domination.

As I recall, it was Clinton who had us …ME… over in Yugoslavia trying to stop fighting in a break-away country full of ethnic tension. No neocon cabals there…

No, but we will arm the Georgians to fight. But it won’t be like Iran arming insurgents in Iraq, totally different.

Instead of pointing at the neocons, try looking at historical evidence on the social progressives (liberals). It is they who put the US into wars throughout most of the 20th century. _The_Cult_of_the_Presidency_ provides a good beginning for reading.

This situation is more serious than most people here seem to think. It’s not a new WWII, but quite possibly the start of a new Cold War, with resurgant and militarily aggressive Russia. Calling for an attack on Russia isn’t real smart, but neither is the President’s decision to stay in China and play beach volleyball instead of starting some very heavy diplomacy, including leading a unified Europe to counter Russia.

Not that Georgia didn’t ask for it, of course. That diplomacy should also involve telling our ally not to be such a complete fuck up in the future–assuming Georgia has a future except as a Russian province.

yeah, yeah, yeah, we all know the evil neocons (read:jews) want the u.s. to throw down on every nation on the planet minus canada. Anyone who speaks out against forceful incursions of democratically elected states (who also happen to be allies of ours) is obviously hiding some nefarious plot. Just because they didn’t come right out and SAY the u.s. should invade, we all know what those 2 jews meant. Thanks ThinkProgress for opening my eyes. Thankfully they’re progressive so they obviously cant be racist.

Jeez … you former and current military people who were not REMF’s get out a darn map. Then look up “Shanghai Cooperation Organization”. Pay attention to the Caspian Sea north of Iran and the Shanghai Cooperation Organizations there surrounding the Caspian Sea and then notice the countries south of Iran that have an interest in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Then, notice on that map where Russia and China is located. In relation to what you ask? American and Israel hostilities towards Iran. Putin is saying more than you think he is. China already has been quite clear.

Is this about oil? You bet it is … and our neocons started it and even went as far as Russia’s back yard. And American taking Iran and propping up a puppet for access to the Caspian Sea? Yea … right!

How many NATO countries are in the Caspian Sea area? Get yet?

I wonder if Our Betters in Washington will send our troops to defend some far-off land rather than bringing those same troops to our Southern border? Seems to me we have a pressing matter right here at home when we have Mexican bandits in uniform encroaching our borders and holding our people at gunpoint.

Cheney – “must not go unanswered”.

Double negatives – the bane of the English language.

Not to threadjack, but, why is it so hard to just say it directly – These threats must be answered.

    God.

And oh yeah, I am pretty upset about the neocons and their war drums.
