John: Newspapers do a rewrite of AP stories all the time. AP knows its customers (newspaper editors) have to cut each story to fit the allotted space, and so they carefully write the story with the most important facts at the beginning, gradually working down to the little details, so you can chop it off after any paragraph and still have a story that makes sense and is not terribly inaccurate – but this style is often annoyingly repetitive. Small-town newspapers generally just chop to length. Better newspapers determine how much can be included and rewrite.

But those are humans doing the re-write. I don’t think the AP would have a case because it was a computer doing the re-write badly, rather than humans (who don’t always do so well, either).

OTOH, wouldn’t a man who is repeatedly called “Homosexual” in the newspaper have a prima-facie libel case? Or isn’t that defamatory anymore?

I was reading that hospitals have a new term for reporting how someone contracted HIV. They use the term MSM. I think Male Sex Male. Evidently there are a lot of guys out there that get stoned and or drunk and have sex with other guys even though they claim not to be gay. They screw whatever but are not gay so the hospitals write it down as MSM.
Now, uhhhhh…… well.

One way to end this shit real quick-like is to sue AFA for defamation of character. By changing the name, not only are they in violation of copyright, they are accusing the subject of sexual perversion. That’s a tort right there.

A C&D isn’t going to stop these people, a full-blown lawsuit against the officers of the AFA and the people operating the website will be the only thing to get their attention.

Something I don’t think I’ve seen address is this: They are changing the text of AP and other news wire articles and attributing this changed text to the AP. Is that really ethical, heck is it legal? I mean can I just quote anyone and change the words they use because I prefer something else?
