The US has to do something with these" combatants "sooner not later. After 6 years in solitary ,they know nothing about anything current, if they ever did, actually. The world is watching and knows the US is wrong on Gitmo. Congress should try to rename the place CAMP BUSH.

I'm not in favor of the tactics, but this would certainly make for high comedy!

The article mentions that the Austrialian was convicted.

Is that true? Is so, is there a distinction (I really do not know and have always wondered).

I thought he plead guilty in order to serve his sentence in Austrialia.

Yes, chsw, it'd be much tidier if every time some thug rolled up on our guys with some tied-up goatherder who'd offended his clan, our marines had simply murdered the prisoner on the spot.

Gives you a hard-on, doesn't it?

I think that we should immediately fly the Saudi citizens in Gitmo back to the Wahhabbi paradise, where the enlightened souls ruling that beneficent kingdom will have them shot on the tarmac.

As has been pointed out many times, Gitmo would not have been necessary if US military adopted a "take-no-prisoners" rule of engagement.

@JWH

Until they receive a fair trial here is your list of names.

We weren't even allowed to know their names until they had been imprisoned for 4 years.

What is a reasonable amount of time to be able to defend yourself against such charges? I don't think 4 years passes muster.

jwh is your garden-variety pants-wetting authoritarian type.

Greg London at Making Light dissected this personality type some time ago and explained the function of the squishy bits inside:

http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/010143.html#259010

"What happens then is that rather than attack the thing that makes them afraid (the terrrists), they prefer to focus their attention on anything that threatens their peace of mind, which is to say, they attack anyone who says they can't trust the government. The gummamint gives them a sense of security because they believe power and authority is the answer. If you question power and authority, you question the very basis of their security, you threaten to force them to take back their exported fear, and so they attack you."

If jwh is being honest in his statements and not just trying to elicit a reaction, then I'd say he must enjoy being lied to, especially by his master The Government.

<i>Please name any Gitmo detainee who has been falsely imprisoned by the government’s abuse of the Patriot Act? I only want one name…..just one…….</i>

Ah, guilty until proven innocent. How un-American of you. Why not RTFA? "...less than half the inmates were determined to have committed a hostile act against the United States or its allies. Only 8 percent are suspected to be Al Qaeda fighters."

Do the fucking math. All of the hundreds of released detainees were guilty? Really? All of them?

You don't deserve a name, but here's one: Murat Kurnaz. There was no evidence against him, so he was released, but the government still has him labeled as an "enemy combatant."

Another name: Abdul Razzaq Hekmati died of cancer at Guantanamo where he was held for being a member of the Taliban, even though his struggle against the Taliban (who had imprisoned him) was well documented.

The question is, why do you trust the government to be 100% efficient at arresting only guilty people when it's not 100% efficient at doing anything?

Maybe if Hillary becomes president, orders the CIA to secretly kidnap Sean Hannity and hold him forever without charge and completely shut off from the outside world so not even his family knows where he is, maybe then, the neocons might see it. Until then, incredibly, they seem to trust the government with this unlimited, unchecked, totalitarian power. They would never abuse it or make a mistake.

We're not talking about boy scouts here (paying no disrepect to the unfortunate ones in Iowa, to be sure).

Which of you readers are going to go face the surviors of the innocents that these vermin kill when they're set loose on the world? C'mon, don't be shy.........
