Drat, I thought it was a civility initiative to smarten up the trash, at first.

Saddest line in the story:

"With pensioners, by the time they sit down their hats always come off anyway because they were brought up with manners so usually take their hats off indoors."

You bunch of whiny-ass paranoid alarmists. Have a look at the words written at the base of the Statue of Liberty sometime: <i>"If you didn't do anything wrong, you should have nothing to hide."</i>

If it were up to you privacy kooks, it would probably say, <i>"Come back with a warrant."</i>

Yorkshire has banned hats in pubs, restaurants and other public indoor spaces. However, there is no mention in the ban of burkas or keffiyehs which also conceal the face.

This has actually been occurring in Australia now for a long time (plus 8 years) in the poker machine rooms of a pub or club. I'm not sure if it's law but I know a majority of pubs and clubs with poker machines implement this policy with the effect being that if you refuse to remove your cap they will ask you to leave/refuse you entry.

I never really saw it as a problem myself, although I don't play poker machines nor wear a hat when I go out. I would like to see the numbers though as to whether it made a difference or not as it's a clear infringement on one's freedom.

"Maybe Komrade Radley, vit his media connections can zearch for dis video, hmmmmm….?"

I looked for it for a while. I had caught it in its second run that night. Usually back then and even now, they would repeat their prime time programming starting at 11 eastern and would re-run the weeks schedule on the weekend. I really didnt think much of it in 96-97 but flash forward to 2008 and ive been thinking about that video fairly often the last few years. I would love to get my hands on a copy of it.

The mayor of London recently banned consumption of alcohol on the Underground. On May 30th, thousands of Londoners protested by consuming copious amounts on the trains. Sounds like Yorkshire needs to consider a similar protest.

"Kind of funny that this type of thing is what used to help us get all fired up and ready to fight those commies in Russia.
Now we think, ‘Vell, zey had zum pretty good ideas.’"

I havent brought this up here or anywhere else b4, but back around 1996-97 there was a documentary filmed in russia on the discovery channel. They were interviewing some members of the former KGB. These people who were interviewed said that when the soviet union fell, many formerly secret documents were openly available for the u.s to gain access to. According to these people, the dept of justice and the cia were only interested in documents and the like that pertained to how the soviets kept their people in line. Ya know... the psychological manner in which they did it, the internal infrastructure they put in place to help accomplish this, etc. The people interviewed said it was common knowledge over there that the american govt did this because those old soviet/kgb files werent on computer but were still in regular file cabinets. The u.s govt simply asked the file clerks for what they wanted. They didnt even look for it themselves. I tried to find that documentary again because i wanted to record it, but it never aired again, at least as far as i know.

Last time I was in England, I went to a bar and was told by the doorman to remove my "headgear". After pausing for a moment to figure out what the hell he meant, I realized he wanted to remove my hat. I couldn't figure out why, but perhaps this is it. CCTV cameras were already everywhere there at that point (2003 sometime).

I don't see myself being to eager to go back there anytime soon. Very sad. Britain has had a pretty fine tradition of openness and freedom (at least compared to most of the rest of the world), but they now seem pretty intent on destroying that.

There was a time when using the term "police state" was inflated rhetoric used to describe relatively free countries who instituted silly regulations. Now I think it belongs on the UK travel brochure. Combine this with the ever-increasing numbers of native-born Brits fleeing the country for good, and we really could be witnessing the end of a first-world nation within our lifetime.
