  • The Virginian-Pilot runs yet another editorial critical of the way the state is handling the Ryan Frederick case. Good for them.
  • Man who sold steroids to NFL players, and who met with the league last month to turn over names, found shot to death in his home. Think this kind of thing would happen if the league (and for that matter, Congress) took a more live and let live approach to PHDs?
  • A Reddit poster yesterday described this as “the saddest picture on the Internet.”
  • I don’t know about you, but as much as those Che shirts annoy me, there’s also a part of me that appreciates the beauty of somebody making a capitalist fortune by selling the likeness of a commie icon.
  • Another example of our post-reductio age.
  • The inventor of Pringles has died. Guess how he was buried.

Yes, it’s kind of ironic that a Communist leader’s image has brought in so much money in merchandising. Che is probably turning in his grave about it, too.

BTW, have you seen the red shirt with a picture of a monkey (wearing Che’s hat) that reads, “Viva la Evolucion?”

On the ducks, it’s sad, but I guess you could say that a mother duck who wasn’t smart enough to realize that it’s a bad idea to go walking her ducklings across a grate big enough for them to fall through is probably what Darwin was talking about when he discussed natural selection. Surviving in nature is about adapting to hazardous conditions. It’s not really more sad than the deer and turtles I see dead along the roads every spring and summer. Actually, the deer and turtles are probably more sad because highways aren’t as avoidable for animals as a storm drain.

And the dead steroid dealer is being looked at as a possible murder-suicide (the woman found with him was an apparent ex-girlfriend). It didn’t necessarily have anything to do with the war on drugs at all.

If the city relaxes its focus on Frederick even for a minute, attention might shift to their conduct of the raid and they’re probably afraid that wouldn’t stand up to much scrutiny.

It’s a shame, but the only thing that can save Ryan Frederick is enough of a public uproar that it becomes impossible for the city to prosecute him (or win a conviction). It’s not about common sense or right and wrong. It’s about covering their asses and ignoring the elephant in the room.

Thanks god it’s getting press attention locally as well as here.

I think the photo of the dog next to his master’s body bag that you ran last year is sadder.

      CC,

      Yeah, that was much sadder.

I was going to say the same thing, so…um…what he said.

The duck picture, sad though it is, extracted a burst of evil laughter from me. (In my defense, I’ve been watching a lot of Jeff Dunham lately. I think he’s a bad influence.)

I’m telling myself that the photographer pulled the cover off and rescued the ducklings after the picture, so don’t ruin it for me.

As for Che, if you *really* want to desecrate his memory:

Many years ago, while driving to work on a Sunday afternoon, I came upon a mother duck going crazy by a storm drain. I stopped and looked and saw several ducklings had fallen through the grate. Because I couldn’t lift the grate myself, I drove on to work, rounded up some strong guys and a crowbar, went back and we reunited the family, much to everyone’s (especially mama) delight. Definitely made our day!

A few years ago, a feral cat and about 5 cute little kittens took up residence under our deck. One night as my wife left for work, she noticed them over by the street drainage grate and called me to ask that I go out and check on them. When I went out, sure enough, there was one of them at the bottom of the drain. I pulled the grate off, but couldn’t get the kitten out since he (and all the cats), being feral, would scurry away from me. I eventually left the grate open a bit and tied an old bed sheet and let it hang down so that the kitten could use his claws to scamper up and out.

The next day, we noticed all of them back together again, so it must have worked!

Found a story that appears to be about the same group of ducks, and apparently all of them got pulled out of the grate after the photographer called animal control. Can’t include a link because Radley’s spam filter apparently won’t let me.

Actually, there are quite a few stories out there about ducks and storm drains. Looks like the cities with waterfowl should consider using grates with slightly smaller holes.

This may be the first time in history that a comment threat on theAgitator has given me the warm fuzzies.

I feel sorry for eveyone who doesn’t feel the Orwell picture was the saddest.

      Russ,

It’s only because ducks are cuter than Orwell :)

At least Dr. Baur wasn’t freeze-dried, milled, reconstituted, fried and salted before he was placed in his can.

I’ve always heard that there are ducks as big as volkswagens in the sewers. That’s what the alligators as big as buicks eat.

      Tokin,

      That was pretty good :)
