I talked to one liberal recently who said that she would be in favor of prohibition if it meant that there was no black market involved with it, and favored a nation wide banning of smoking.
At times I forget that liberals can be just as authoritarian as conservatives.
Someone should tell Michelle that you can be informed, but are informed with CRAP. People need to go through an awakening (usually some major catalyst starts it) and then they will begin the deprogramming from all of the bullshit that was fed to me. It’s liberating to unplug from The Matrix.
Everyone must believe. If you don’t, we’ll make you believe. Yay America!!!

The CIA is using RFID chips to help the alien invaders control our brains.
OPEN UP YOUR EYES SHEEPLE!
“go back to your lives … uninvolved, uninformed”
wow, she really is rude and spoiled. so, lets see … he’s the canidate that won’t let me keep the life i’ve built because i’m an idiot? hmmm … that seems fair. i can’t say he’s pandering to me. he doesn’t even like me. very refreshing.
“But what if I don’t want to give a crap?”
Well, he’s going to demand that you do. He’s going to require you to work, like the well-behaved slave/tool that you are. And he’s going to make it all happen with cadres of fawning girls than even the Beatles could muster.
Obama for overlord! http://www.nostate.com/28/i-for-one-welcome-our-new-obama-overlords/
Ah, yes, the ‘Progressive Era’ blossoms anew! We’re going to do you good – our kind of good – whether you want us to or not!
I don’t know about you, but I’m bloody sick of all these social engineers tinkering with our lives. As Don Rickles once said of Congress about 25 years ago, they should “All be put into a ‘home’, and stop bothering the American people!”
Voters want a mommy government and any serious candidate is going to repeatedly tell people what they want to hear. You guys are all under the naive assumption that running for President involves stuff like principles, leadership, respect for citizens, and a compelling wish to make the country a better place. In the back of our delusional little minds, we all want that to be true. But it’s not.
It’s really all about doing whatever is necessary to get elected. If drowning puppies on national television would improve their chances of winning, they would empty out the world’s animal shelters by the end of the week (and O’Reilly would have a expert on his show evaluating, by their body language, whether they were sincere puppy killers or just playing to the cameras).
You guys are worked up about Michelle Obama making vague statements about Barack pushing you to engage? Did she talk about all the laws he was gonna pass or something? Even the Hilary one wasn’t about compulsory action. There has to be better examples of Nanny stating positions out there.
It is disheartening that this is the sort of crap people seem to want to hear, but even with the enhanced president plus powers Bush is leaving to his successor, these are not things the president can do. It is the same basic bullshit we get from any Presidential campaign. It is a lot like Republicans going on about gay marriage or family values. Annoying, but meaningless and empty.
“But what if I don’t want to give a crap?”
Then McCain is the candidate for you.
/obvious
In a convoluted political way they are speaking the truth. You’re going to have to engage and work your ass off just to pay the taxes. Nannyism isn’t free! It must be paid for by the sweat of the protected slaves. Right now both camps probably have people working furiously on new programs to separate us from our money.
Do you suppose that if we made the president’s term 8 years the media would have time to cover something besides the election and American Idol?
Nah. They’d just start running for office four years earlier. Unless you limited them to only one term. In fact, that sounds nice. Limiting Congress and the President to one term would mean no incumbent candidates. We’d all feel like we died and went to heaven…
There will be engagements alright….many.
Election nonsense=election nonsense.
i can’t decide which is worse: a country where people are purposely disengaged and vote callously based on mere whims and theatrics…or a county where the government forces you to ‘engage’ and to work.
Nice, I point out that Michelle Obama isn’t proposing legislation she’s making platitudes about how Barack will force you to be engaged and I get -3. So if Barack Obama gets elected and manages to charm you into becoming more engaged, shedding your cynicism, and pushing yourself to be better without legislating it this is some how the nanny state. Bush has been torturing people and trampling rights while a disengaged citizenry has allowed it and the commentators here are worried about Michelle Obama’s platitudes. Seriously what about MO’s speech sounds at all like a policy proposal or proposed legislation? Get a grip.
Both quotes remind me of 1984, but especially Hillary’s. Remember that scene in the book when the protagonist is awoken by his TV screen and made to do exercise first thing in the morning? Yikes.
waaah, crack. hell of an argument there, though: “y’all are bein’ mean to me! anyway, it’s all mean ol’ bushitler’s fault!”
I don’t care if your mean to me, I just don’t understand how you can equate either of these as being evidence of a mommy state. The Hilary one is at least proposing a government program, but the Michelle Obama one isn’t. Heck the speech could be about not allowing you to rely on the government, or how he’s going to stop having the government think for you, or how you should stop expecting it to protect you from all harm. Is that really the most mommy state thing Michelle Obama has said? There has to be better examples than that. If you wanna get all worked up about Michelle Obama, at least find the stuff that she’s said that refers to the mommy state stuff she advocates. Or maybe even more from that speech, there is probably at least a dig at some aspect of capitalism in it. Right now you guys are just baying at platitudes that don’t really mean anything and reading evil mommy state intent into them.
I think I know what Michelle Obama is talking about, and I don’t think it’s a bad thing.
