Band of Brothers: Pacific

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

In the comments section the other day, someone mentioned that they’d read a while back about a possible second Band of Brothers miniseries set in the Pacific theater, but hadn’t seen anything about it since.

Actually, there is such a series in the works, and it’s post-production now. I only know because a high school chum of the Agitatrix snared one of the leading roles. Looks like it’s set to hit HBO sometime next year.

For those interested in history, I highly recommend the Victory at Sea series of documentaries. Dam good television, heh. The documentaries themselves are fascinating as are the little tidbits delivered by Peter Graves during the introduction of each episode.

I can confirm the filming of this project. Not that it now requires confirmation but I discussed it as some length a few months ago with James Badge Dale the week he was shipping out to film the series. His impression was that it would be a very interesting project that required significant physical work for the actors. Badge said he was in training to drop a significant amount of weight for the show. I’m excited in anticipation.

Hopefully, they’ll get the same calibre of acting talent that the original BoB had.

It’s amazing how many of the hottest new actors (both here and abroad) have this series to thank for their current success.

@Deadcenter: Don’t forget to mention Richard Rodger’s killer soundtrack for Victory At Sea.

And, dammit, why did they have to do this? The first BoB series is absolute crack for me.

Radster, is this one being made by the same people?

Eugene Sledge has a book called “With the Old Breed” describing combat in the south Pacific.

    OMFG! Awesome.

James D. – Tom Hanks and Spielberg are listed as executive producers… so, yes.

The book it’s based on wasn’t written by Stephen Ambrose, probably only because he hasn’t written an appropriate book about the Pacific theater.

Love BoB. I try to watch it at least once a year. Hope the 2nd one is just as good. I wonder how they’ll try to handle the humanization of the Japanese like they did the Germans in the first one?

Hopefully the cast turns out to be as surprisingly stellar as in the first one (though David Schwimmer was really out of place in BOB in my opinion). Too bad this appears to be ‘based on true story’ rather than an actual true story, but who knows …. with Hanks/Spielberg money behind … they should do it right (again).

    SPOILER ALERT:
The best part about BOB was when at the end they showed you that all the old guys narrating were the ACTUAL guys from the story.

The original BOB suffered from a serious case of ‘Bad Timing’ too or else I think it would have been MUCH more popular. I mean it came out on TV right after 9/11 if I remember correctly. ‘Realistic war’ wasn’t exactly what people wanted to see at that time.

I would of used the exact same actors from the original.

When they’re on the boat, discussing where they think they’re going (and when Winters is on the train too) instead of finding out they’re invading Normandy. They could go to the Pacific. Cause I just don’t think the original actors can be topped. Just my opinion.

    Still, I can’t wait for it! :)
