A Man, a Bowtie, and His Dream

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Well this would certainly make things interesting.

I support the idea. Carlson has grown increasingly libertarian over the years. He was great to Ron Paul during his surprising run through the early primaries. Carlson is also articulate, TV-savvy, and very much not crazy (not always a given in the Libertarian Party). He also gets libertarianism. He knows how it all fits together.

He seems to have shed his old Weekly Standard ways for a new skin. Can you imagine if he could manage to get some time in the debates? I think he’d do very, very well.

No thanks. I mean that with the most gratitude.

    “very much not crazy”

That’s not saying much is it? The dude couldn’t handle Jon Stewert – he won’t be able to handle Obama or McCain.

Jon Stewart took him to the woodshed and back during his appearance on Crossfire. Begala was smart enough to realize Stewart was tearing them apart and shut up early. Carlson, after hitting rock bottom, started digging.

    Tucker Carlson? seriously ?
    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

(after getting up off the floor and wiping away tears of laughter…)

Not only did Jon Stewart take him to the woodshed, the poor hack brought on Triumph the Insult Comic Dog a few weeks later, simply to “look good”. It was painfully obvious that this was done to do the show that Jon refused to do. Triumph played along just fine (which is okay, but kinda sad on Tucker’s part)

Tucker *sometimes* gets libertarianism. He doesn’t do it consistently.

I didn’t realize he’ll have to run against Jon Stewart.

That interview embodies everything I can’t stand about Jon Stewart. He’s makes political points until he gets into trouble, then he falls back on the “I’m just a comedian” routine when it’s not working. He got the best of Carlson in a TV sense, but he did it in a way that no actual candidate would be able to.

I’m coming out of Agitator retirement to comment on this one . . .

Tucker Carlson is the most articulate small government advocate on TV. That libertarians would laugh at his candidacy speaks volumes of why ordinary Americans (myself included) laugh hysterically at libertarians (also included). He’s the most prominent voice of smaller government in all of America. Of course, since he’s anti-abortion, is on TV, used to wear a bowtie, has an an outstanding/hideous quaf, he must be ridiculed by all of the sophomoric libertarian blog commenters.

On the Jon Stewart debate, how can any thinking individual not in Jon Stewart’s cult agree with him. Carlson is on for 30 minutes in the afternoon on a barely-afloat cable news show while Stewart is raking in millions with his hit latenight show. And Stewart has the balls (albeit those of an extremely short man with a giant head) to say Tucker Carlson is “ruining America.” The primary target of Agitator posts to me are about FOS do-gooders (usually in government) forcing their poorly thought-out ideas and moral superiority on the general population. And yet Stewart does this every night, never in more spectacularly ignorant fasion than on Crossfire, and you sycophants are all over his nuts.

    Also, Colbert rules.

Jon Stewart used to be funny. Years ago.

To think that a guy is an inappropriate choice for Presidential candidate because he “lost” an interview with Jon Stewart is ludicrous.

First, Chris is right… every time they hit Stewart with a tough question he fell back on, “That’s your job, you’re the journalist, I’m just a comedian.” There’s no way to win against a guy that pulls that.

Secondly, how many other politicians are as quick-witted as Stewart? Or any comedian, for that matter? They’ve honed their chops dealing with hecklers in tiny clubs for years. Do you think Hillary or Obama could get on a little stage in a strip club and verbally deal with a drunk guy yelling shit at them? It’s a different skillset, so to say that he’ll lose arguments against other candidates because Stewart made a fool of him is silly.

Carlson may be a fine choice, depending on what exactly his political views are. He’s hinted over the years at a lot more depth than he was allowed to reveal when he was a supposed to be an unbiased journalist.

    Carlson is an ignorant opportunist.

Sure, that doesn’t necessarily exclude him from the pack of assholes who regularly run for office, but he is a special case.

And by “special” I’m talking short-bus special.

Some claim he reads well in print. I wouldn’t know.
His septic, simpering, brown-nosing public persona has told me everything I need to know about him already. He’s completely fucking dead to me.

I don’t think I want a president who lacks the debating skills to take on Jon Stewart.

    No thanks.

tde – I don’t think any modern President could beat Jon Stewart in a debate. That’s not to say there’s anything special about Jon Stewart, I just don’t think politicians stand a chance against a comedian.

I suspect Carlson, who is just a right-wing hack who rehabilitates his image by pandering on libertarian issues from time to time, is making a last-minute push to try and block Bob Barr from getting the Libertarian nomination. Barr would take the race seriously, and cause real problems for McCain.

  14. #14 |  Matt Moore |

mattt – I think he’s probably more a libertarian who plays a right-wing hack on tv.

Anyway, none of this was true. He’s confirmed that he’s not running.

[q] I answer “Undecided,” which is true.

Guy asks, “After that first choice, what is your SECOND choice?”

Stunned for a moment, I pause and say, “Still….undecided.” [/q]

That made me laugh. (and if my quote tag doesn’t work,I apologize and I’ll figure it out eventually)
