I don’t think they were really complaining about lower prices. (And if you think movie popcorn is cheaper now than it was 20 years ago, you’re on glue) but simply noting that being able to buy more soda for less money meant that people were drinking more soda, when soda wasn’t very good for them.

Also, it’s not like the author’s solution was more government regulation. She suggested doggie bags.

Made sense to me.

I thought the non-Reno 911 video was *hilarious.* The Benny Hill music was a genius touch.

And if I’m going to have sugar, I want *real* sugar. Not sucralose, or aspartame, or high fructose corn syrup. They’re all crap. Don’t believe me? Do your own research.

The one that kills me? When it says HFCS *or* sugar on the label. Make up your damn minds!

Have coffee portion sizes really changed? I’m pretty sure it used to be that in most places that served coffee in 8oz cups, someone who finished a cup would be offered another, often without having to even ask for it. I don’t think that a diner who was given an 8oz cup and then told he’d have to buy another one if he wanted more would have felt better 20 years ago than such a diner would feel today.

None of the cases described in the article involved a deportee who was violent or likely to escape. They do this for the convenience of the guards, so as not to have to spend 12 hours on a plane with someone listening to someone scream about being deported. That's the problem. They should have to listen to it, and it should be inconvenient.

I think it’s funny people are actually complaining that food is too cheap. What’s weird, though, is that most of these “problems” have simple fixes individuals can make, that don’t require government Nazis. Instead of drinking coffee with sugar and cream and flavored syrups, drink one black with Splenda, but then food Nazis don’t like artificial sugar either. This would apply to diet soda as well- the artificial sweetener is allegedly bad because it makes people crave sugar more, but if the only sugar you eat is artificial then how does it matter? I think the real problem these people have isn’t with people being unhealthy, but with people enjoying themselves. It’s the Neo-Victorian ideals that gave us the war on drugs, the war on sex, and now the war on food. These people just hate happiness.

Randy: the legality of the US drugging detainees without a court order is one thing.

But isn’t it pretty clear that a doctor can’t prescribe like this, and a nurse can’t administer like this, without risking the loss of their license? Has anyone referred this to the AMA or licensing agencies?

On the bullets hitting water. This also works to a degree with glass. Sometimes the glass will cause the angle of the bullets flight to change, which is why police snipers don’t like firing through it. I have to admit the water bit is really neat, but I still wouldn’t want to be under water with a hale of bullets going through it.

Actually, I was wondering of I could come up with a plan to fit this into my next overseas vacation. I mean, if they’re providing free drugs and airfare, surely I could fake being illegal.

With my luck, it would be then that they’d switch from drugs to beatings.

I don’t want to see deportees beaten. And I don’t want to see them TASERed, or even put into that Hutto prison for families in Texas. But I sure as hell don’t think that administering ANY type of substance via needle through someone’s clothing is safe and humane. I think it’s an unacceptable violation of someone’s person and even worse than forcing an anal probe on an unwilling suspect in a drug search, vaginal searches on women, ripping out a guy’s catheter, etc. The medical profession kills 225,000 people per year due to medical mistakes. Now we have law enforcement administering medicine. What could go wrong there?
