what ever happened to talking to the kid's parents about the situation? maybe the dad tried this before and the kid is just a serial wedgie-er. and i guess the guy may have, but the article doesn't say. but really, the police? that should be a last resort. these are kids here... they make mistakes and do wrong things sometimes. why is the first step the law?

It's not satire, it's real. The wedgied kid's dad called the police not because he thought it was criminal, but because he thought it was "inappropriate." In a cowboy town like NP, it's perfectly legal to defend yourself in any manner and people expect you to do so before you call the police.
My heart goes out to Tokin42. I "served" 17 years there and it is like a big wedgie.

My experience has been that the parents of bullies are worthless, and more likely than not to egg on the behavior. That rules going to them out in most cases. Like Frank said, if your kid defends himself, he might be the one getting cuff slapped on. I can't really blame anyone for calling the cops in this case (assuming it isn't satirical, as suggested above).

Problem is, very few on the original link commenting are providing any support of the victim, which is typical. Legally, this is assault, and if the kid had defended himself from the wedgie, guaranteed he'd be in juvie hall awaiting trial.

Lack of any support from adults, particularly authority figures, are how Columbines are created. Think about that for a minute before you stark joking around.

North Platte is my hometown!!! I've never been prouder. Actually, Frank Graham from the Bulletin is the all-time bestest journalist (apologies to Radley, but Frank writes more stories about me).

Not that it's easy to tell these days, but I'd wager that's satire.
