Other Jefferson Scholars Beg to Differ

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Two esteemed Thomas Jefferson scholars have taken issue with Prof. Peter Onuf’s characterizations in the Washington Post of how Jefferson would have reacted to the arrest of Brooke Oberwetter last Saturday night at the Jefferson Memorial.

Both are worth reading. I sorta’ thought Onuf’s characterization of Jefferson sounded odd. But I’m not a Jefferson scholar, just an admirer. Good to see others who have studied his life and work disagree with Onuf.

I would be interested in what Christopher Hitchens has to say about this. He wrote a book on TJ a short while back.
As a reason contributor he would be an ideal candidate for an opinion…
Sorry if the above articles mention his name… I live in china and that website is blocked.

Huzzah! Confirmation of what the majority here thought what TJ’s reaction would really be.

On a side note to comment #1 - The Agitator is not blocked in China? Sounds like an oversight which I’m sure will be taken care of in the very near future. The word freedom appears far too many times here not to be blocked from the liberty-starved people of that country. Which, of course, is an extremely sad thing. :(

I wonder how many Jeffersonian scholars they had to call for a supporting quote before they got this guy?

1: Ummm…Jeffy was kinda big on all that peaceable assembly junk, as far as I can tell. Sorry.
2: What would Jefferson think? Did you miss the whole 4th grade, or something?
3: You want me to say what? Hahaha. No.
