Just Say No Reno

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

David Bernstein expresses his admiration for the Innocence Project, then his shock that of all people, Janet Reno would be on the organization’s board of directors. I share both sentiments.

I had similar feelings when the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers gave Reno an award a couple of years ago. Perhaps Reno has changed from her days as a prosecutor in Florida and her time as attorney general. But to my knowledge, she has never acknowledged her error or apologized for the innocent people she convicted of child abuse in the 1980s, which was a big reason why she got her job in the Clinton administration. And then there’s that whole Waco thing.

Until she does, it’s unfortunate that these otherwise admirable groups would honor her with awards and board positions.

To be fair, she inherited the Waco fiasco. Her solution left a lot to be desired, but she did not start that mess.

She might not have done anything different, but the blame for the start does not belong to her.

Or using a SWAT team and tactics to settle a custody battle. Reno suxors.

Waco? Waco was hard to understand, but seeing Elian Gonzalez at gunpoint and the complete abuse of power that was involved in a child custody situation has prevented me from joining the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. I may be a “sleazebag defense attorney,” but I would never support that kind of crap.

To be clear, that is just the NYC-based Innocence Project. The other Innocence Projects are only associated via the Innocence Network.

She demonstrated exactly what she was during WACO!

Her aids right along with her.

THAT event should have started Something very big in this nation, and did not! Musta been fear of the $$ running out.

She never has and she never will apologize.
    SUCKS to be her.

hey, i don’t see what the problem is.

she “took full responsibility” for the waco murders. she “took full responsibility” for the elian debacle. the buck stopped on *her* desk, by god!

and then, when her capo retired 8 years later, she left office. because that’s what a consigliere is all *about*: responsibility.

geez, it’s not like (it can be proved that) she KILLed anyone or anything.

She needs to be held accountable in this lifetime.

That’s right, the Davidians had no responsibility whatsoever for the fiasco.

What exactly was the “debacle” with respect to Elian Gonzalez? The criminals that were holding him refused lawful orders to surrender him to the proper authorities. The boy was extracted without harm and returned to his father.

She would make an excellent addition!

While we’re at it, let’s greenlight that appointment of Hu Jintao to the Amnesty International BOD.

    helluvva comment there, jeez.

and vicki weaver was probably also at fault for getting shot while holding the dangerous and highly explosive *baby*, right?

    moron.

“That’s right, the Davidians had no responsibility whatsoever for the fiasco.”

I’m going to be an unreasonable jerk here and hold the attorney general of the U.S. and the law enforcement agencies under her control to a higher standard of common sense and good judgement than a pack of religious cultists in Texas. “To protect and serve” does sometimes involve protecting people who follow 187th-rate messiahs from themselves.

Chuchundra: Do the decrees of government rank above the rights of people? Yes, everyone who tries to flee Cuba’s tyranny is a “criminal.” If this is a condemnation of them rather than of the tyrants, then you’re saying that might is right. And saying that returning refugees to totalitarian states is “without harm” is absurd.

Kids are not government property, to be returned to their owners.

It’s dispiriting that Dorothy Rabinowitz was 100% correct on the child abuse hysteria but was a right wing attack dog on Clinton, credulously mouthing every absurd rumor. Also, a keyboard commando on Iraq.

Re those honors bestowed on Reno:it’s obviously about what team(party) you belong to.

A multi-party system could go a long way towards breaking up the
seemingly unnatural alliances of apparently decent people with lowlife pols. There are technical fixes that would help to break up the corrupt duopoly (e.g. wide application of IRV and PR), but no-one really seems interested.
