“King of Carrot Flowers, Part I,” by Neutral Milk Hotel.

Hard to believe, but the wonderful album this song is from is now 10 years old. This cut features two teens having their first carnal experience–while the girl’s parents carry on a violent argument. Plus, allusions to Anne Frank.

Strange, surreal, and weirdly beautiful.

I love NMH, that is a fantastic album. It’s really 10 years old? Man, time flies.

“Holland, 1945″ is my favorite cut from that album. I read that Jeff Mangum developed a crush on Anne Frank after reading her diary, and that’s what that song is about. But who knows?

Holy Shit! 1998 is 10 years ago?

Nice choice! I’m still a partisan of Two-Headed Boy, (part 1) but this one’s a favorite, too.

Zeb, well said. my internal clock has been stuck on 2000, possibly until it’s 2010.

I’ve actually never heard of these guys before but I agree with Mikestermike’s description of them.

Second that on Holland 1945. It’s heartbreaking and beautiful. And such a great sound to it. I’m usually not much for anything with horns, but they just work.

Good work there Mr. Balko. After reading Overkill, I didn’t think I could gain any more respect for you. How wrong I was. Incidentally KofCF is tied with Sweet Communist Daughter for my favorite off of ITAOTS.

Also, I think the best description of NMH was from Magnet or Pitchfork: “…like a marching band on acid.”
