   I’ve been trying to suss out the reasons for the resurgent interest in poker. Will it last? Will it burn out, as fads do? And what’s behind it–the sagging economy, Americans’ love of vicarious risk, or some other factors I’m not aware of?

   Poker appeals to the vane side of people. It gives them an opportunity to show how they are better, or smarter, or trickier, or a better strategist than the other people at the table. In a tournament, there is a clear winner, assumed to be the best player at that moment, luck notwithstanding.

   Why do you think that people can never stop talking about their “bad beats?” Because it allows them to place the blame for their loss on luck rather than the skill of the other opponent (i.e. they were the better player but luck interfered). It’s all about ego.

   Speaking of bad beats and Andy Bloch.

   Seven card stud. Andy is to my right. Guy to my left brings in and it folds to Andy who raises showing a 10. I reraise with AA 10. 4th brings me an ace and Andy a 5. Andy check-raises me and the action is capped. I brick on 5th and Andy pairs his board. I call down 5th, 6th, and 7th (which I probably should’ve folded). What a donkey. F’ing idiot.

   I should probably mention that Andy had wired 5’s so he tripped on 4th and completed the house on 5th.

   Also, he seemed like a really good guy.
