Dogs in Danger
Monday, March 24th, 2008I’ve been meaning to blog this for months, but Michael D.’s post at Balloon Juice about volunteering at the Humane Society is a nice reminder.
If you’re thinking about getting a dog, you might check the Dogs in Danger website first. It gets notices from adoption shelters across the country about dogs who are nearing their date to be put down. Search for a shelter near you, browse the dogs available, and if you see one you like, go in for a visit.
If you rescue a dog via the site, drop me an email with a photo. I’ll be happy to post it.

I didn’t rescue through that site, but I did rescue a mutt from the shelter, and she is awesome. In the spirit of your dog blogging posts, I give you Beckett: http://billmill.org/static/galleries/Beckett2/
I have one “pet store” dog (puppy mill) and two rescue dogs and the rescue dogs have much better temperament and are much easier to train. They’re just more “socialized” by being around other dogs besides siblings.
Radster, you make my blood boil every once in a while, but this is the best post you’d had in a long time and I commend you. People don’t realize that millions of dogs are killed each year while they go out and pay $500+ for some fancy-bred dog. I’ve had 4 dogs in my lifetime and every single one of them has been a ‘rescue’. They have all been great pets. Sorry, no place where I can currently link a dog photo.
I’m on my third rescued doberman, and the first I got as a puppy. I’d like to recommend these folks. They put a lot of their own money out to care for these dogs so their a bit particular about who they’ll give one.

BTW, If you want an exceptionally intelligent, loyal and protective dog you can’t ask for a better breed. Don’t believe the stereotypical hype, they all want to be lapdogs.
My mom and sister have been talking about getting a new dog. They both really wanted some $300-400 small rodent-dog (any dog that weighs less than 20 pounds is not of the same species), but my sister recently objected to that and is now saying she wants to help a dog from the local shelter. That made me happy, and my last dog came from there and he has been amazing: pit bull/lab mix.
Hey if people are going to start whipping out pictures of the “kids”…
