Amanda Overmeyer goes home. Carly Smithson, one of the two best singers, was in the bottom three this week. And Kristy Lee Cook miraculously lives on. On talent, Overmeyer probably shouldn’t have lasted more than another week or two.

But Smithson’s a surprise. She’s got the voice. As I wrote a few weeks ago, not having the Idol look I think means she’s going to have to be perfect every week.

They lie about the bottom 3. They let slip that Fantasia was never in the B3 after a season where they had claimed she was.

I hated to see Amanda go but “Back in the USSR” just ain’t the kind of tune America wants to listen to right now. That and the fact that she was terrible performing it. I thought “Carry On My Wayward Son” would be her low point put I was wrong.

And there was no reason to delay the inevitable. She was not going to make it more than another week or two anyway.

I agree with Scott but I did not know that had been verified. There is no way Carly Smithson was in the bottom three. Sure, that glowering tatoo probably does not help her in the heartland but her singing talent is undeniable.

Maybe she should go with long sleeves for a week or two.

I don’t know why, but I just don’t like Smithson. She’s got an OK voice, but her performance just leaves me feeling … blah. Maybe it’s her look — I like to think I’m not superficial, but hell, I’m still a guy.

I’m really looking forward to Kristy Lee Cooke going home. She annoys me to hell and back. So does Carly, for that matter.

My main issue with Carly is that she’s already had her chance to make an album and even a pricey music video…and she failed miserably. I don’t see why she should win and be given another record deal and even more money when she’s already had her chance and proven that she is probably incapable of doing it. I would much rather see somebody win who’s never really had the opportunity to get a record deal (I don’t mind if the contestants have had minor shows in small venues, just not the big-time stuff like expensive music videos and shows).

And despite Amanda being at the very least unique, I have to admit that every song she sings sounds identical to me (this effect is most obvious when she is singing songs I am not familiar with). I’m glad she’s gone, but Kristy and Carly also need to go, in my opinion.

Tatoos make people feel hostile. People aren’t going to vote for Mrs. Queeg Queeg* to be American Idol. No way.

*Her husband has a tatooed face.

About 1 in 6 Americans has a tattoo, and the number of people who have friends with tattoos has to be much higher. In 1940, Penny, you might have been right. But not in 2008.

Plus, have you forgotten Blake Lewis? That guy is covered in tattoos, and he was the season six runner-up.
