If nothing else, I was told, it was a sign of respect. You didn't want to be the "Ugly American". And, from what I saw, the people there did appreciate it. Somehow though, it is considered racist to expect that those coming to this country to LIVE, speak English. When my grandfather came to this country, he spoke 2 languages, but no English. Not only did he learn to speak English, but he taught himself to speak without an accent. Why? Not only did he want to speak the language of America, he wanted to speak it like Americans did. Then again, that might be why, when he retired, he was the chef in a restaurant, and not the dishwasher.
