Kevin Leitch, a career criminal awaiting sentencing for his conviction of 13 residential burglaries, was arrested yet again on a burglary. In his normal haze of stupidity he thought he was negotiating with a detective to drop gun charges (mandatory in Ohio) when he reported that drugs were being sold from my nephew's home. Of course he made it up & in part it played a major place in my nephew's death during a drug raid. Using the "truthful" information of an informant is an oxymoron. The word of a career criminal against that of a young fellow who had no felonies. They were clothed in black assault wear loaded down with flash bangs, bean bags & helmets. In other words they were loaded for bear. Go figure. And yes we would Really like to know what happened in Lima.

Hey, I completely understand. I often write the way I "sound" to myself and it changes depending on how I feel and, as you say, what I'm leaving unsaid.

Often, unfortunately, I sound too sarcastic but that's as much a defense mechanism as anything. When things get so bad and you're helpless to change it, sometimes the way to deal with it is to laugh, to distract... anything to keep from crying.

I love Radley, but damn he does make me want to cry.

To Mr. Williams, I thank you for your compassion.

Bronwyn, I accept your apology and am not offended by your comment. Mr. Moore, you have a sense of humor, and so did my son.

My focus these days is not on the “grammatically correct” rules in? or of? writing

I use … as a bridge, as I pause to catch my breath (this is a very upsetting subject for me) or as a time out “to edit” and assess my thoughts before sharing them. They provide me with the gaps I need before I can continue on.

What I leave unstated in those ... would fill volumes.

Thank all of you for caring.

From the student apartment raid: "Get down on the ground! We have a search warrant!"

That's the most chilling non-sequitur I've heard in a long time.
Is it really any different than "Assume the fetal position! Our slip of paper trumps your safety, liberty and dignity!" ?

Regarding your "SWAT Roundup" post...

I am disgusted…each time I read about SWAT teams...being sent out and used in situations where they are not called for…and for which their use was not intended…or…SWAT teams being formed …organized…and allocated for…by those departments…in places…where they don’t truly have a need for such a force.

There have been more and more incidents…where SWAT team presence…used unnecessarily…is the catalyst for escalating…what should have been routine police work…into “raids” with fatal outcomes…and that if not for them…families on both sides of these tragedies…would not be mourning and grieving…visiting cemeteries…missing their family members…and having to face the remainder of their lives...without their loved ones.

There were victims who were…innocent…defending themselves from unexpected and unknown intruders…as their homes were wrongly invaded...because of inaccurate addresses…or bad information from deplorable sources... non-violent suspects …or officers of the law...unforgivable prices were paid…in the loss of these lives.

Invariably what starts out poorly planned…usually culminates in a bad outcome…and as a result of the misguided use of SWAT teams…the public is then given excuses and explanations ...that come across…as nothing more than cavalier attempts…at the justification for either their inception…or for their blatant and flagrant involvement…in totally inappropriate circumstances.

What will it take…and for how long. Exactly how many families will have to endure the unbearable…before the overuse of SWAT teams…is acknowledged and remedied?

This is my opinion…and as these incidents keep occurring…and nothing is done to rethink this SWAT team mentality…I see no peace for those of us…who have already found…and those of us who will find…ourselves at their mercy.

I remain disheartened and saddened…because of those who have sworn…to protect and serve.

Like this town needs a SWAT Team! Now the residents will be in MORE danger than they have ever been with these nuts running around bashing in doors at night and throwing flash grenades into their homes. This confirms my belief that the cops are bored little boys who just want to play army and blow things up.

Maybe what our country needs is for veterans of Iraq to stage a "<a href="http://www.constitution.org/mil/tn/batathen.htm" rel="nofollow">Battle of Athens</a>" with one of these trigger-happy PDs.

Parents,

Please take an active role in the moral education of your children. Do not rely on the public school system to give them a solid and consistent respect for individual rights, a healthy distrust of those who wield force (government), and the courage to put their principles before their orders. If you neglect this duty, your children may grow up to become members of a SWAT team.

2) "are raiding this house, that they have raided several time before"--So it doesn't work except as a media tool to show they are tough on "crime"

"two of the men jumped out the window and into the arms of a commando"--Commando? Is the British military now taking part in executing search warrants?

4) If you have 11 officers and you need a SWAT team, maybe its time to consider dissolving your police department and going with a bigger department.

"It smells like weed, but I don't know where it is."

Sounds like every other officer I know who "smelled" weed in my car after a traffic stop. Somehow, they always seemed to smell it, even though I never smoked it nor allowed anyone I knew to smoke it in my car.

I remember when the concept of "stormtrooper" was associated with tyranny and brutality. Now, under a new name, ego-driven thugs bask in glory as they routinely gather in force to bash in front doors and terrorize insubordinate citizens who mistakenly believe in the once revered idea that their government will leave them in peace if only they don't bother anyone else.
