I enjoy Simon’s lambasting of Carly…everytime she sings. I have worked with a number of Brits over the years, and boy, they always seem to lay into the Irish. I wonder if there is some ‘subtle’ Nationalism in there……

Kristen – Carly’s failure does tell them something… that classic record label promotion techniques just don’t work anymore. But I bet that being on AmIdol, whether she wins or not, is going to make her a huge star.

The women are better every year. I swear there is some serious wiggle work done by the producers to ensure that there are an equal number of men and women in the final 24. A lot of women went home who were leagues better than some of the guys this year, and that’s the way it is every year.

It’s not so much wrongdoing, as misrepresentation. I want to see that Dairy Queen cashier from Podunk who most recently sang in their high school production of Damn Yankees, not some failed previously-signed artist who’s getting one more shot from their record company. This Carly woman failed the first time around, despite massive promotion from her record company. That ought to tell them something, no?

So, Kristen, you’re saying that American Idol is lying when they say that the contestants don’t have current record deals? Not to mention that there would probably be a big foofooraw if someone who did have a deal with another label got far enough that they had to sign with the label associated with AI.

I can certainly believe that some contestants had prior deals. They increased the maximum age a few years ago, so you’re gonna see folks who signed with a label in their late teens, never had anything come of it, and want another shot.

I’m not saying I like the way record companies deal with their talent (it’s horrible and exploitive), but I don’t see the wrongdoing here.

That Carly is the one that was signed a few years ago and was really pushed heavily by her record company. Her album flopped, so they try again with Idol. The whole show is nothing but a showcase for record companies to pimp their up-and-coming and struggling acts.

Pretty right on just like yesterday, though I think Joanne will go home rather than Kristy. Neither sang well but Kristy is way more attractive and memorable partly because she went first.

I disagree that the girls are stronger. Syesha is the only one that has the whole package that will be needed to win while several of the boys have a legit shot.

Love the idol blogging, nice to know that you’re not a singularly focused policy wonk.

Good write up, Radley, and right on. I was most disappointed with Carly last night. The producers and the judges apparently love her – they have been selling her since the audition show – and Randy and Paula were heaping the praise after her performance. The problem was she was not very good, especially compared to some of the other women last night.

Syesha, Alexandrea, and Ramiele are my 3 favorites going forward.
