Year of the Beagle?

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

That seems to be the CW as Westminster this year. A beagle has never won, but this weekend a tri-color named Uno won the hound group for the first time in 70 years, and now seems to be the crowd favorite.I’m a sucker for the Old English Sheepdog, like these guys.cm-capture-2.jpg

I have a papillon - she is a sweet, feisty, silly little thing. And she looks just like a Mogwai with her coloring and giant ears :-)

Apparently there are no 14″ beagles….

I’m with ZappaCrappa… I’ll take my big furry mutt over my parents’ nut-job Goldens (and their hip problems) any day.

Yeah mutts are the best dogs, hands down. Best temperaments and least amount of physical problems.

Everybody loves beagles. My beagle is easily the friendliest dog ever, and they are def. cute as hell.

Uno was shaking his head — his ears — I’ve had a beagle & that means he has an ear issue - an infection or a cold…

I hope the handler realizes that! Uno is cute and I’d hate for him to have an earache!

Whoever decided to breed dogs for appearance rather than useful skills and attributes did a great disservice both to dogs and dog owners. Dog shows like this are terrible because they promote breeding toward a physical ideal rather than vigorous, healthy and useful dogs.

I find the whole idea of dog shows somewhat silly and am convinced that the majority of people that participate really aren’t much different than the people portrayed in the movie “Best in Show”.

I’d put my 2 dogpound rescue mutts up against any of those purebreds for looks, intelligence, loyalty, disposition and temperment. And to be quite honest…some of those breds are just downright ugly and hard to look at.

The beagle won. It appeared to be about the only dog in the whole show that wasn’t doped or bored out of its skull.

Basenjis. Basenjis are the way to go. They don’t drool, they don’t bark, they don’t crowd you out of the bed, and hey, I needed to replace that rug anyway.
