nazimos0902_468x196.jpgThat’s the British Olympic soccer team giving the Nazi salute to the German government before a 1938 friendly with Germany in Berlin. They were ordered by British athletic officials to give the salute in the spirit of being gracious guests. The country apparently hasn’t learned much. The British government is requiring its athletes to sign an oath to stay mum about Chinese human rights abuses while competing at the Beijing Olympics. Refuse to sign, and the government won’t let them compete. Here’s hoping a British athlete signs the oath, then breaks it after winning a medal. It’d be nice to see the British government put in the awkward position of actually trying to enforce the ridiculous gag order.

Heh. Easy enough. When any Brit wins a medal, they should give the Nazi salute while on the podium. If asked, they can state they forgot which horrifying dictatorship it was their government had ordered them to lick the boots of.

Just on a point of accuracy, it’s not the British soccer team; it’s the English soccer team.

Otherwise, this Brit agrees with you 100%.

Right on Radley. The best think any self respecting athlete can do is sign the “oath,” then ignore it.

    Wankers…!

As it’s not the british government which is asking them to sign the document i really don’t see why they would try and enforce it.

AS it is the relevant part of the contract they’re being asked to sign by the BOC does little more than call attention to the existence of a clause in the IOC charter, which forbids any demonstrations in the olympic venues. And the BOC is saying that not trying to impose any form of gag on the athletes except for whilst they’re in the actual arena.
