I agree with PJ and slicky, the piece Real Sports did on it showed that it's not a frivolous thing. Not to mention that athletic competition is often a key to networking later in life, not just in the inner city but everywhere. These kids will be expanding their circle of contacts to people that can help them down the road with colleges, employment, social events, etc. in an world that probably wouldn't be accessible to them through sports that predominate where they live. It's a rather condescending attitude to dismiss the people who are running this program out of hand and assume that the kids participating won't be able to use it to their advantage.

If there's no tax money involved, what the heck's the problem? It's not like they're just importing black kids to carry trays.

I second PJ. I doubt anyone who saw Work to Ride featured on Real Sports would think this is a vanity thing.

This really isn't as weird as it sounds. There's a very successful program in Philadelphia called Work to Ride that's been teaching horsemanship and polo to disadvantaged youth for many years now.
