My Fox Column…

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

…this week is a response to the Weekly Standard’s recent dig at libertarians. Couple formatting/style issues: Not sure why they capitalized “libertarian” a few times. I was obviously referring to the philosophy, not the political party. Also, the Fox folks didn’t set off the quoted passage from the Standard in block quotes.

    Pretty good article.

    My favorite section is:

“Which is exactly why libertarians believe in limited government. Libertarianism acknowledges the trappings of power. Libertarians understand that people are generally selfish, and behave selfishly. The free market harnesses self-interest in ways that are productive and positive for everyone.”

I think it really sums up libertarianism well.

Other than “Pot, Porn and Prostitutes” of course ;)

Excellent piece. There are a number of reasonable objections to libertarianism, but the Weekly Standard contains none of them. I love how the neo-cons are trying to blame their corruption on the libertarian wing of the party. They must be taking their cues from the radical Left, who have been blaming the libs for Bush’s private contractor/mercenary fetish for a few years now.

The Weekly Standard just took the original conservative position and flipped it upside down.

Jefferson: “Let no more be heard of confidence in men, but rather bind them down by the chains of the Constitution.”

The Weekly Standard spin: - Men must govern men, and men have characters, good or bad, and those characters are decisive for how the country is led. The ideology of the economists leads far too many to sneer at the honest, if imperfect, attempts of a man to be virtuous and to put that virtue in the service of his country.

I know the whole “l” vs. “L” thing has been beaten to death, but it really bothers me when people mistakenly capitalize “libertarian.” There’s a big difference between “democrat” and “Democrat,” as is there a big difference between “republicanism” and “Republicanism.” Why can’t non-libertarians grasp the difference?
