Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008- Before Ron Paul announced for the presidency, I had planned to write a Fox column profiling former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, explaining what an excellent GOP candidate he might make. Only makes sense, then, that Johnson recently endorsed Paul. Here’s hoping Johnson gets back into politics. A small-government, humble foreign policy, veto-happy guy like him may be just what the GOP needs should it be in the position of trying to reclaim the White House in 2012. Oh yeah, he also favors ending drug prohibition.
- I’d probably look at him the same way.
- One of the cleverer bumper stickers I’ve seen in awhile.
- It’s been eighteen days since Lima, Ohio police killed 26-year-old mother of six Tarika Wilson in a drug raid, and wounded her one-year-old son. They still aren’t talking. And in Chesapeake, Virginia, still no word on the specifics of the raid in which Ryan David Frederick shot and killed undercover raiding police officer Jarrod Shivers.
- Meanwhile, the town of Verona, Mississippi (population 3,334) will soon have its own SWAT team.

I’m rather amazed at the reason for the SWAT training:
“Due to the increase in active terrorism and shooting incidents,” said Hill, “it’s important for officers to be well-trained in many fields, especially tactical training.”
ACTIVE terrorism? In a town of 3,334 people? If only the reporter had the gets to challenge him on that one…
I kind of thought this bumper sticker was pretty funny:

W/R/T that “face of the day” picture, a good caption would be “At least he didn’t try to grope me like that other president.”
Re: Giuliani – He was the most conservative candidate on the NYC scene at the time. NYC Republicans might be considered Democrats in VA. OTOH, NYC Democrats might be considered insane in VA.
The smear tactics you talk about are very familiar – they are Classically Clintonian. See Judicial Watch’s FOIA release of previously classified papers relating to the 1993 HillaryCare debacle. The papers show that smear campaigns were planned.

As a contrarian, I have to point out that the bumper sticker has the “Q” and “N” in the wrong positions. An odometer rolls down, not up.
Oh, also, Radley, thanks for this site.
I liked Johnson as governor. I wish he would have run for president in the last election. He probably wouldn’t have won, but I don’t think the media could have as easily ignored him in the debates, and he could have used them as a good method for pumping the message about ending drug prohibition.
Or, at least, that’s what I thought at the time. Having now having seen the MSM do everything in their power to avoid talking about Paul, I’m less convinced that they wouldn’t have just ignored Johnson. Though, he did make national headlines for talking about it while governor.
New Mexico does pretty good on governors, even if Richardson isn’t as good as Johnson. Maybe I should run. I’m sure they’ll love me. :D
