Hopper at the National Gallery

We went to see the Hopper exhibit at the National Gallery this morning. It was fantastic.

    Wow. Those are lonely, sad paintings. I never stopped to pay attention to Hopper before, but this really has emotional impact. What were the rest of his paintings like?

    Maybe you’ve seen Nighthawks, probably Hopper’s most famous painting. I saw this exhibit at the end of December when I was in DC… thought it was really interesting. Many of the others have the same kind of quiet tension to them.

    There is a stoic loneliness in the american spirit. Hopper knew how to paint it.
