Casting a Wide Net

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Police in Daytona Beach, Florida are looking for a suspected serial killer. He’s described as…

…likely clean-cut, employed and involved in a relationship, possibly even married…

…"This killer is one of us," Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood said. "He is our next-door neighbor. He is somebody we go to church with. It is somebody who is a respectable, decent human being on the outside."

The punchline:

Chitwood asked women involved with someone with qualities likened to the serial killer to contact the police immediately. He said they may be in danger themselves.

Now I wonder how the chief is going to sort through the 156,000 possible leads phoned in?

So, basically, 35% of the population is a suspect (males between the ages of 25-50)?

Lets just throw all of them that fit this description in jail. Then we won’t have to worry about it! Oh, but if they could “prove” serial killers were likely black, there would be plenty of new jails built to do it! To bad most serial killers and pedophiles are white!!!

I understand your concern, but think of the context: He’s talking about finding a “respectable, decent human being” in Florida — there can’t be more than two or three.

I think the cops in Daytona Beach have been watching too much Dexter.

God help any college-educated professional who is unfortunate enough to break up with his girlfriend in the next few weeks.

How old is Chief Chitwood, is he in a committed relationship?

    Huh. Is that pronounced shitwood?

Maybe someone needs to question Jeb Bush…

    Chris-

I came here to say that exact thing.

    Thank you.

Any word on if the bodies were found at the bottom of a body of water?

Maybe I saw it here, but Malcolm Gladwell had a great article in the new yorker on ‘profiling’.

I think I have spotted him while riding on a bus at Geneva, Switzerland. Is there a toll-free line from Europe?

    Nathan:

Great episode. But I think the line was “beneath running water.”
