Five-Star Fridays
Friday, January 11th, 2008My colleague Jesse Walker has an excellent piece up today from our February issue on Steve Earle, who walker says, “used to write stories. Now he writes op-eds.”
I couldn’t agree more. I stopped listening to Earle after Jerusalem, which had all the subtlety of getting smacked over the head with a shovel. It’s too bad. El Corazon, I Feel Alright, and Transcendental Blues were all incredible albums.
Also, what happened to Earle? I saw him on Letterman a few months ago. He looked like he’d just stepped out of a grave.
Two Five-Star Friday picks today: Earle’s “I Fell Alright,” title track from his 1996 album, and “Transcendental Blues,” title track from the 2000 album.

Steve Earle is in recovery for drug addiction.
His new CD ‘Washington Square Serenade’ is one of the best and his rendition of ‘Down In The Bottom of the Hole’ is being played on the new “The Wire: And All the Pieces Matter- Five Years of Music From The Wire’ CD and on the show itself.
Steve moved to NYC from Nashville – good luck to him.
Just one small note, Steve’s father died a little over a week ago. While invariably you wouldn’t have posted this now if you had known, and your stories vs. op-ed comments may well be on the mark, your timing sucks.
Yeah, Washington Square is great – you should try it.
