As an Indiana University alum, I can’t say that this surprises me.
Lenin on ice.
John McCain’s okay with keeping U.S. troops in Iraq another 50, “maybe 100″ years. Rudy Giuliani floats the idea of another Cheney as vice president. The GOP’ gonna’ get slaughtered come November.
Unlikely love.
Some interesting fact-checking on violent crime during Giuliani’s tenure as mayor of New York. One other thing: Contrary to conventional wisdom, violent crime in New York did not drop because the city was tossing more people in prison.
Some incredible photos of people who’ve lived in three centuries.

RE: Bust of Lenin in Antartica:
Ozymandius
by: Percy Bysshe Shelley
I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: “Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert… Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal these words appear:
My name is Ozymandius, King of Kings,
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
Crime in NYC dropped not because more people were put in jail, but because the people who committed crimes over and over and over and over and over, were put in jail.
So he wants a experienced conservative who has been around the block as his VP. So what? I seriously doubt he meant a “war criminal” or whatever you cool kids are calling the VP these days. As for McCain, what do you expect him to say? Like it or not, the US has just as much interest in that part of the world as they do in Japan, Western Europe and more than in Korea. Again, doubtful if he is talking about a shooting war, but rather a military base and presence there. How will that go over in that part of the world? Today, not well. In the future, who knows?
If those are the only two issues keeping someone from voting for either of them, then the voter is a moron.
“Contrary to conventional wisdom, violent crime in New York did not drop only because the city was tossing more people in prison.”
Fixed that for you.
Did you actually read the link, genius?
There were fewer people in NYC prisons throughout Giuliani’s term.
So throwing more people in prison couldn’t in any way have contributed to the crime drop, because they weren’t throwing more people in prison.
Ha ha. Nice first link. Just wondering, is that the best you can come up with? Poking fun at the way some students come up with beer money? Especially considering that those students will probably be in that field when they get their degrees? Wow. I’m impressed! ;-) I mean, how else are you gonna get beer money, right? Not everybody can ask their mommies. “Mommy, can I have some money for booze?” Or, “Mommy, can I have some money to pay the cover charges to get into every bar in Bloomington?” :-P
Seriously, though, the college of agriculture is no longer a main focus at Purdue. It’s, what, seven per cent of the entire student body? Or somewhere around there? Same old tired typical I-Who putdowns. Ugh. ;-) As a poli sci major, I don’t know if I would have subjected myself to that, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. :-D
Boiler Up! WOO-WOO!!! :-D
I always liked necking by the lake……
Yes, the GOP is likely going to get slaughtered since they can’t/won’t elect the one candidate that could beat either Obama or the Hildebeast.
Eric, you went to Purdue for poli-freaking-sci? What for? It’s not like Purdue’s liberal arts program is world-renowned or anything… You may diss the ag program, but what percentage of Purdue is poli-sci majors? It’s we engineers that carry the weight around West Lafayette.
Radley, I’m a huge fan of your blog, despite the fact that you’re a Hoosier. But really, is this a knock on Purdue?
IU Student: “Damn, that shit stinks!”
Purdue Student: “You’re correct, and a Boilermaker is going to investigate ways to make the shit stink less, or at least tell you how far away you need to be to not smell the shit.”
Make fun all you want, we’re making lives better :-)
Brad, I see your point and I raise you the link I provided. Enrollment figures for the College of Engineering and CLA are about the same. For a year, CLA actually overtook Engineering. Either way, they are still fairly close, although it does not break CLA enrollment down by major, so I can’t tell you how many political science majors there are exactly.
You know what it is? You’re just jealous that we actually had classes with women, and we were able to enjoy Thirsty Thursday! ;-)
Seriously, though, this debate has gone on for years. It doesn’t make sense to pollute this weblog entry over something that will not be resolved anytime soon. However, I must state that 1. I feel that I received a quality education in West La-La, especially considering what I am doing in grad school, and 2. I didn’t dis the aggies; rather, I pointed out that they are not as big of a deal as they once were. I don’t have a hatred for any of my fellow students and/or alums.
Okay. Carry on. :-D
Radley,
There’s no need to bash Purdue. I, like Brad, try not to hold your IU Alum status against you. I actually feel a bit of pride to know that someone from Indiana (the state) is doing what you do. Especially someone from so close to my hometown. I mean, I could ask you how that first bowl appearance in 14 years went?
Alos, Brad & Eric, your argument is ridiculous. Eveyone knows the School of Technology is where it’s at, workload of a Liberal Arts major, with the career options of an engineer.
The idea that Guiliani was responsible for the crime drop in NYC has been routinely debunked. It’s one of those things that people want to believe so badly that they ignore the incontrovertible facts. To take just one example, Michael Tonry of UofMinn Law School has been pointing out for a while now that not only did the crime rate start dropping across the country before Giuliani, but that many other cities that did NOT enact the zero-tolerance and broken-windows policies NYC did saw equal if not greater drops in all types of crime. That is an essential, and effectively conclusive point.
