“Sunday Morning Coming Down,” by Kris Kristofferson.

An absolutely beautiful bit of songwriting. In fact, I’d put this on my list of top ten pop songs ever written. The version below is a live duet with Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash, both of whom have also recorded the song solo.

I don’t like the Kris Kristofferson version even half as much as the Johnny Cash solo version. But he wrote it, so, big props.

I know there are countless versions of this song floating around, but my favorite latter-day cover was done by Crooked Fingers on their 2002 “Reservoir Songs” E.P. It’s worth checking out if you get the chance…

    Hey, Thanks much for that!

Radley, I’m a long term Reason subscriber and I’ve been reading your blog daily since you started it a few years back when I was a Brit in OH going through my INS (or whatever the Hell they call themselves now) nightmare for residence status. Now many thousands of dollars in attorneys fees later, a legal resident in MD and less than two years from starting naturalization I want to make the following prediction; your writings for the cause of individual liberty and your investigative journalism will one day earn you a Pulitzer Prize. All the best for 2008 and dont let up!

I think that’s all of the Highwaymen, actually: Cash, Kristofferson, Jennings and Nelson. I’m not sure if the second guy from the left around 2:49 is Waylon Jennings, but it looks like him, and it sounds like him singing in the chorus. You can definitely see Willie Nelson in the video.

It is definitely the Highwaymen: Cash, Kristofferson, Jennings and Nelson. All four are there on video and in voice.
