Wow, this thread degenerated fast, with the (fake?) Huckabee supporter who doesn’t understand our electoral system (no one is “awarded” the presidency, the electors vote), the raging anti-semite (note: Israel is not the cause of all of, or likely any of, our problems, it is at best a scapegoat, and in this case I do feel confident with the accusation of anti-semititsm), right down to the (fake?) Paulite who has to understand that, while Ron Paul has some decent positions, he has some that don’t fly (see, e.g., trade, monetary policy) and has the same chance to be our next president as I do, and I am not yet 35).

A quote like this is really funny. A cry of support for the most Christian candidate followed by condemnation, then a wish that the person burn in hell. So much that a good Christian should not do: judgement and no compassion.

I really wonder how people like this think. So…. angry, and mean, and really lacking any spiritual essence.

I think its going to be a tight race in 2008 and columnists could play a bigger role this year because the differences betweent the candidates are probably smaller than they’ve ever beend. Its going to be about personality more than issues and op-ed pages will likley have more say on that than anything else right now.

I’d love to see Obama vs. McCain. That could drive some real discourse.

The editorial board of the NYT will also run the gamut of more wars for Israel, please (Dowd, Krugman, Herbert), to more wars and unconditional support for Israel (Kristof, Friedman), to please just merge Israel with the United States and blow up every country within a 2000 mile radius of Israel (Brooks, Kristol).

Doesn’t the Times also publish John Tierney? I think he falls outside the spectrum you listed, more toward the libertarian camp.

I do think that you are wrong about the influence of the paper, though. The only people particularly influenced by it are those who already agree with its editorial positions. Everyone else knows that what’s being published is largely crap. It’s too easy to get information from people actually in the field now without having it filtered through outlets like the Times (see, e.g., your reporting in Mississippi, Michal Totten in Lebanon, Israel & Iraq, Michael Yon in Iraq, etc.).

Why should I give a shit about what a “reporter” says, when I can listen to a witness?

I’m guessing it was a rock-paper-scissors showdown between Kristol, Krauthammer, and Goldberg. When I read any of these guys, all I do is say “What? You idiots, how can you think that???!!!”. I don’t even bang my head anymore. When talking to friends and family I get blank stares. I send them links like Bushisms, Planet Moron, Onion, and of course Tom Tomorrow. (I’ve sent them the real sites like yours multiple times.) Even a blatant attack blog like Rude Pundit doesn’t get them going. They just shrug and think I’m overblowing things… Invasion of the Body Snatchers? Makes ya think, donut?
