In Which I (Finally) I Agree With This Department of Justice

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

The DOJ is asking the Supreme Court to put limits on the “Speech or Debate” clause in the Constitution. The clause is (or at least was, a long time ago) necessary to prevent an executive from sending police to hold up legislators during an important vote. But it’s been taken to absurd lengths, to the point of allowing members of Congress to cover up felonies, such as the congressional leadership’s wagon-circling to prevent embarrassments like Reps. William Jefferson and Mark Foley from having their offices searched.

Do not forget John Murtha trying to use the “Speech or Debate” clause to keep the Haditha Marines from suing him for libel for calling them “cold-blooded killers”.

This should never have been in the constitution in the first place.

    1) If the President is prosecuting them under a bad law, Congress deserves to be hoisted on its own petard.

    2) If the Congress is being prosecuted under a good law, then if they have nothing to hide, they have nothing to fear (I love using that statement against government personnel >:) )

    3) If the President is behaving like a dictator, it’s time to impeach him. If the President won’t step down, then issue a letter of Marque and Reprisal against the President, authorizing any American citizen to kill him on sight for attempting to overthrow the government.
