Episodes like this, which are being reported with increasing frequency, are leading me to believe that I would be best home-schooling my two year old rather than dealing with irrational school officials.

Do not send your kids to public school. Public Schools are increasingly becoming intellectually void, serving more as a 6-hour holding-cell for youth than an educational institution.

As much as I love to rip on the public schools for this behavior, it is caused by the way that many Americans behave. On the one hand, they’ll scream about how this child is being abused for having a steak knife, but the majority will turn around and demand action and policy changes if the knife is used as a weapon. Most Americans aren’t consistent on issues like this like those of us posting here.

Usually stories like this blame the school administrators. As Cat says, “school officials inability to reason for themselves”. They are school officials after all. One really can’t expect them to have any common sense or ability to reason as one would expect from an adult. One can just as well blame the police.

Principal: “That girl has a steak knife; she should be arrested on felony weapons charges.
Cop: “That ain’t a weapon, that’s a steak knife.”
End of story.

Regardless of what the principal says, it’s the cop’s decision whether or not to arrest. If the cop has no discretion in the matter, then it’s the fault of the clowns in the round circus who pass the laws.

A steak knife can be used as a weapon. So can a sharpened pencil, a heavy textbook, a stapler, and (at least in Massachusetts) a shod foot. It seems that every school is not only tolerating, but requiring “weapons”.

More disturbing than this young girls arrest, is school officials inability to reason for themselves. Are teachers becoming government programmed ‘Stepford wives’?

Government minion is NOT an example I want set for my child.
