Self Promotion

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

My article in the December issue of reason is now available online.

It’s a book review of Kevin Davis’ Defending the Damned, where I also try to make the libertarian case for giving more money to public defender offices.

I fully support the conclusion Radley reaches, but I have no idea how it can be presented as a libertarian one. What makes it libertarian, rather than one borrowed from conservatism or liberalism?

Bout time Radley got his comments section back up. google troy messer and the first thing that pops up is me whining about Radley getting rid of them. Woo hoo.

I’m not camping out in Radley’s brain, but I figure he views the PD office as a check on prosecutorial power. So yeah, it’s more spending, but it results in dissipating the state’s power to jail whoever it wants, which I gather is somewhat libertarian.

I’ll go ahead and be nitpicky: it was Gov. GEORGE Ryan who put the moratorium on the death penalty in the (ultimately unsuccessful) pursuit of avoiding jail time for corruption (the natural end of the Illinois politician). Jim Ryan was a candidate for governor.
