CNN picks up on the 1994 Dick Cheney interview.

As I was watching it, I realized that I was watching a YouTube video of a CNN report about a YouTube video of a C-SPAN interview. That made my brain hurt a little.

Anyway, according to the clip, Cheney’s office hasn’t responded, but has responded to questions about similar Cheney statements from the 1990s with the usual “September 11th changed everything” routine.

But again, September 11th didn’t change what Cheney is talking about in the video. It didn’t ease ethnic tensions in Iraq. It didn’t suddenly make Iraq governable. It didn’t make a post-Saddam occupation by U.S. forces less likely to descend into quagmire. On the contrary, as we’ve seen, 1994 Dick Cheney was exactly right. It’s far more likely that the real difference between 1994 Dick Cheney and 2007 Dick Cheney is that 2007 Dick Cheney has a heck of a lot more power.
