Profiles in Timing
Friday, June 29th, 2007I’m amazed at just how good The Colbert Report has gotten. The writing is consistently brilliant. For my money, “The Word” is the best political commentary around. That they do it four times a week, almost entirely in satire, and are able to pull off such consistently insightful, biting, and (most of all) funny material is pretty amazing.
Colbert himself is incredibly quick on his feet, and incredibly intellectually nimble. His interactions with his guests, which are either improvised or very artfully scripted, show that the guy is a hell of a lot more than the product of great writing. Even when I don’t agree with the point he’s making (backhandedly), I can’t help but sit in awe of his genius. It’s beautiful to watch. Last night, he pretty much nailed my thoughts on the Republican senators who are finally coming around on the war.
I suppose it’s good that my home state’s Dick Lugar is bolting. But damn, Dick. Why now, after all the important votes have been taken?
(Yeah, I know. I answered my own question.)
